My baked apple recipe is very old-fashioned yet tried and true. It's definitely a comfort food. -Rachel Hamilton, Greenville, Pennsylvania

2 medium tart apples
1/4 cup dried cranberries
2/3 cup water
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
1 tablespoon honey
Optional: Vanilla ice cream or sweetened whipped cream

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350°. Core apples, leaving bottoms intact; peel top third of each. Place in a greased 8x4-in. glass loaf pan; fill with cranberries., In a small saucepan, combine water, brown sugar and honey; cook and stir over medium heat until sugar is dissolved. Pour over apples., Bake, uncovered, until apples are tender, 35-40 minutes, basting occasionally with juices. If desired, serve with ice cream.

Filled with honey and cinnamon, Simple Honey-Baked Apples are a perfect fall-comfort-food dessert. With just 4 ingredients and less than 10 minutes prep time, making this tasty recipe couldn't get any simpler!

4 apples
pinch of ground cinnamon for each apple
2 tsp. honey for each apple
1 tsp. chopped pecans for each apple {optional}

Steps:

  • Wash and core each apple, hollowing out the inside while leaving the bottom intact.
  • Place apples in a baking dish coated with non-stick cooking spray.
  • Sprinkle the cavity of each apple with cinnamon; fill each with 2 teaspoons honey and 1 teaspoon chopped pecans {optional}.
  • Cover baking dish with foil. Bake at 350℉ until apples are tender, about 1 hour to 1 hour and 20 minutes, depending on variety and size of apples.
  • Serve warm as-is, with a dollop of whipped cream, or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

6 green apples
1 ½ cups fresh cranberries
2 ¼ cups water
¾ cup packed brown sugar
3 tablespoons honey
6 scoops vanilla ice cream

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • Core the apples, and remove the peel from the top third of each one. Place them in a baking dish, and fill the core holes with as many cranberries as you can fit.
  • Meanwhile, stir together the water, brown sugar and honey in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil, stirring occasionally to dissolve the sugar and honey if necessary. Once it comes to a boil, pour the mixture over the apples.
  • Bake for 1 hour in the preheated oven, basting with the juices every 15 to 20 minutes. Serve with vanilla ice cream.

3/4 cup packed brown sugar
3 tablespoons honey
6 large tart apples
1 cup golden raisins
Vanilla ice cream, optional

Steps:

  • In a small saucepan, bring water, brown sugar and honey to a boil. Remove from the heat. , Core apples and peel the top third of each. Place in an ungreased 9-in. pie plate. Fill apples with raisins; sprinkle any remaining raisins into pan. Pour sugar syrup over apples. , Bake, uncovered, at 350° for 1 hour or until tender, basting occasionally. Serve with ice cream if desired.

4 baking apples (like Spy or Golden Delicious)
1/4 cup diced candied ginger or 1/4 cup diced dried apricot
1/4 cup brown sugar or 1/4 cup maple sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 tablespoon cold butter, cut into 4
1/4 cup maple syrup or 1/4 cup honey
1/4 cup apple juice or 1/4 cup water

Steps:

  • Remove the core of the apples with an apple corer or small knife, leaving about 1/2" at the base.
  • Peel the top one third with a vegetable peeler or sharp knife.
  • Place apples in an 8" square baking dish or in another ovenproof pan that holds them snugly.
  • Place 1 tbsp.
  • raisins in each apple.
  • In a small bowl combine brown sugar with cinnamon and add 1 tbsp mixture to each apple.
  • Place 1 small piece of butter in each apple.
  • Combine syrup with apple juice in a small bowl and pour over and around apples.
  • Bake in a preheated 350F oven for 45-55 minutes or until apples are very tender.
  • Baste a few times during baking.

2 (9 inch) unbaked pie crusts
7 cups peeled, cored and sliced apples
1 cup white sugar
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
⅛ teaspoon ground nutmeg
¼ teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons butter

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C).
  • In a bowl combine apples, sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt. Place mixture in a pastry-lined 9 inch pie plate. Dot with butter and adjust top crust that has been vented.
  • Place in oven and bake at 425 degrees F (220 degrees C) for 10 minutes. Turn oven temperature down to 275-300 degrees F (135-150 degrees C) and bake 40-50 minutes or until crust is golden brown and apples are tender. Let cool and serve.
