MULLED GRAPE CIDER

I came up with this recipe one year when I tried to make grape jelly and ended up with 30 jars of delicious grape syrup instead. I simmered the syrup with spices to make a lovely autumn drink. -Sharon Harmon, Orange, Massachusetts

Yield 12 servings (3 quarts).

Number Of Ingredients 6

5 pounds Concord grapes
8 cups water, divided
1-1/2 cups sugar
8 whole cloves
4 cinnamon sticks (4 inches)
Dash ground nutmeg

Steps:

  • In a large saucepan, combine grapes and 2 cups water; bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Press through a strainer; reserve juice and discard skins and seeds. , Pour juice through a double layer of cheesecloth into a 5-qt. slow cooker. Add the sugar, cloves, cinnamon sticks, nutmeg and remaining water. Cover and cook on low for 3 hours. Discard cloves and cinnamon sticks.

1 gallon Concord grape juice
8 cardamom pods
4 cinnamon sticks
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Steps:

  • In a medium stockpot, combine Concord grape juice, cardamom pods, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat. Simmer the mixture until the juice becomes infused with the spices, about 20 minutes. Serve immediately, or keep warm until ready to serve.

2/3 cup orange juice
1/3 cup sugar
2 tablespoons lemon juice

1 cinnamon stick (3 inches)

Steps:

  • In a 1-1/2-qt. slow cooker, combine the first five ingredients. Place cinnamon stick and cloves on a double thickness of cheesecloth; bring up corners of cloth and tie with string to form a bag. Place bag in slow cooker., Cover and cook on low for 1 hour. Discard spice bag; continue to cook 1-2 hours or until heated through.

  • Place filter in coffee basket, and fill with brown sugar, allspice, cloves, cinnamon stick, salt, nutmeg, and orange wedges. Pour apple cider into coffee pot where the water usually goes. Brew, and serve hot.

Dash ground cloves
1 gallon apple cider or unsweetened apple juice
1 can (12 ounces) frozen lemonade concentrate, thawed
3/4 cup orange juice
1/3 cup honey
1 tea bag

Steps:

  • In a large stockpot, combine the water, allspice, cinnamon stick and cloves. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, for 30 minutes. , Add the remaining ingredients. Return just to a boil. Discard cinnamon stick and tea bag. Stir and serve warm.

1 bay leaf
3 quarts apple cider or apple juice
1/4 cup orange juice
1/4 cup lemon juice
1 tablespoon grated orange zest
2 tablespoons brown sugar
Dash salt
1 to 1-1/2 cups brandy, optional

Steps:

  • Place the cinnamon stick, cloves, allspice and bay leaf on a double thickness of cheesecloth; bring up corners of cloth and tie with kitchen string to form a bag. , In a large saucepan, combine the apple cider, juices, orange zest, brown sugar, salt and spice bag. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer mixture for 30 minutes to blend flavors. Discard spice bag. Strain cider mixture and stir in brandy if desired. Serve immediately.
