5-Minute Sauteed Cabbage with Garlic, Sesame & Chili Pepper image

A 5-minute sauteed cabbage recipe featuring the delicious Asian inspired combination of garlic, sesame, chili pepper, and the umami goodness of soy sauce.

1/2 head of green cabbage
1 clove of garlic, mashed or finely diced
2 tablespoons of soy sauce
1 small red chili pepper, thinly sliced and seeds removed
1 teaspoon of sesame oil
1 teaspoon each of black and white sesame seeds
2 teaspoons of vegetable oil

Steps:

  • Cut the cabbage into roughly 2 cm/1 inch pieces.
  • Toss it into a bowl with the soy sauce, garlic, sesame oil, chili pepper, and sesame seeds and massage it to really rub in the flavours.
  • Heat 2 teaspoons of vegetable oil in a skillet on high heat. Once the oil is hot, toss in the cabbage.
  • Saute for about 5 minutes, mixing often so it cooks evenly.
  • Top with more sesame seeds and some green onion if you're feeling frisky.

1 small yellow onion, thinly sliced
1 teaspoon salt

Steps:

  • Melt butter in a large skillet or heavy pot over medium-high heat. Add cabbage, onion, salt and pepper; cook, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage is tender and beginning to brown, 14 to 16 minutes. Serve immediately.

1 small head white cabbage, including outer green leaves (2 1/2 pounds)
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Steps:

  • Cut the cabbage in half and, with the cut-side down, slice it as thinly as possible around the core, as though you were making coleslaw. Discard the core.
  • Melt the butter in a large saute pan or heavy-bottomed pot over medium-high heat. Add the cabbage, salt, and pepper and saute for 10 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage is tender and begins to brown. Season, to taste, and serve warm.

3 tablespoons sesame seeds
2 tablespoons refined coconut oil
1 medium carrot, cut into thin bite-size strips
1 red or orange sweet pepper, chopped
1 small onion, halved and thinly sliced (about ½ cup)
1 small green cabbage (1 ¾ pounds total), cored and thinly sliced to make coarse shreds (about 7 cups total)
¼ cup water
½ teaspoon sea salt
¼ cup ground black pepper
White and/or black sesame seeds (optional)

Steps:

  • In a large dry skillet cook sesame seeds over medium-low heat for 1 to 2 minutes or until lightly toasted, shaking skillet occasionally to toast seeds evenly. Transfer seeds to a small bowl; set aside to cool.In the same skillet, heat oil over medium heat. Add carrot, sweet pepper, and onion. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add cabbage; toss to combine (skillet will be full). Add water. Cover and cook for 10 minutes or until cabbage is tender, stirring occasionally.Meanwhile, transfer cooled sesame seeds to a clean coffee grinder. Grind until the seeds are coarsely ground. Sprinkle ground seeds over cabbage mixture. Sprinkle with salt and black pepper. Toss to combine. If desired, sprinkle with additional white and/or black sesame seeds before serving. Enjoy!

  • In a saucepan or fry pan, put the oil, half the sesame seeds, the soy sauce and the red pepper flake on a medium high heat. Heat the oil to a light sizzle and until the sesame seeds turn golden brown.
