Each American city dishes up hot dogs with its own combination of toppings. Toledo is no exception. We came up with a version of Tony Packo's Hungarian hot dog, which is a citywide favorite in Toledo, Ohio. -Taste of Home Test Kitchen

Number Of Ingredients 16

CHILI:
1 pound ground beef
1 garlic clove, minced
1-1/2 teaspoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon chili powder
1-1/2 teaspoons Hungarian paprika
3/4 teaspoon pepper
3/4 teaspoon ground cumin
3/4 teaspoon dried thyme
1/2 teaspoon salt
Dash cayenne pepper
1-1/2 cups water
HOT DOGS:
1 package (14 ounces) smoked kielbasa links
6 hot dog buns, split
Optional toppings: shredded cheddar cheese, yellow mustard and chopped onion

Steps:

  • In a large skillet, cook beef and garlic over medium heat 6-8 minutes or until beef is no longer pink, breaking up beef into crumbles; drain. Stir in brown sugar and seasonings. Add water; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer 25-30 minutes or liquid is almost evaporated., Cook kielbasa according to package directions. Serve in buns with chili and, if desired, toppings.

Talk about your heirloom recipes! My grandmother made this Hungarian goulash recipe for my mother when she was a child, and Mom made it for us to enjoy. Paprika and caraway add wonderful flavor and sour cream gives it a creamy richness. It's simply scrumptious! -Marcia Doyle, Pompano, Florida

Number Of Ingredients 16

3 medium onions, chopped
2 medium carrots, chopped
2 medium green peppers, chopped
3 pounds beef stew meat
3/4 teaspoon salt, divided
3/4 teaspoon pepper, divided
2 tablespoons olive oil
1-1/2 cups reduced-sodium beef broth
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
3 tablespoons paprika
2 tablespoons tomato paste
1 teaspoon caraway seeds
1 garlic clove, minced
Dash sugar
12 cups uncooked whole wheat egg noodles
1 cup reduced-fat sour cream

Steps:

  • Place the onions, carrots and green peppers in a 5-qt. slow cooker. Sprinkle meat with 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon pepper. In a large skillet, brown meat in oil in batches. Transfer to slow cooker., Add broth to skillet, stirring to loosen browned bits from pan. Combine the flour, paprika, tomato paste, caraway seeds, garlic, sugar and remaining salt and pepper; stir into skillet. Bring to a boil; cook and stir for 2 minutes or until thickened. Pour over meat. Cover and cook on low for 7-9 hours or until meat is tender., Cook noodles according to package directions. Stir sour cream into slow cooker. Drain noodles; serve with goulash.

MILD BUT RICH CHILI



Mild But Rich Chili image

Sweet Hungarian paprika is the secret ingredient that makes this chili mild but bursting with rich flavour. The three kinds of beans are pretty, but you can use whatever beans you have on hand. And for all you folks that think that "real" chili doesn't have beans, I can only say that I don't want to make a historically authentic Texan dish - I just want a way to cook my healthy, high-fibre, low-fat beans, and I refuse to call them "Chili flavoured beans with ground beef." So there.

1 (19 ounce) can white kidney beans
1 (19 ounce) can red kidney beans
1 (19 ounce) can black beans
2 (19 ounce) cans diced tomatoes
1/3 cup tomato ketchup
1 large onion, chopped
4 stalks celery, chopped
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 lb ground beef
1 tablespoon chili powder
1 tablespoon sweet Hungarian paprika
salt

Steps:

  • Drain the beans, and put them in a large pot with the tomatoes and the ketchup.
  • Set the pot over medium-low heat.
  • Peel and chop the onion; wash and chop the celery.
  • Saute the onion and celery in the oil until softened; add them to the pot.
  • Break up the meat and brown it in the same skillet as the vegetables; when nearly done, add the spices.
  • Add the meat to the vegetables and simmer for half an hour to an hour.
  • Serve with hot buttered toast.
