Provided by Kristen Winston

Categories     Appetizers

Time 30m

Yield 4-6 servings

4 large green tomatoes
1 ½ cups buttermilk
2 cups fine cornmeal
2 tablespoons kosher salt

  • Cut off ends of the tomatoes and slice each tomato into about three 1/2-inch pieces. Put tomato slices in a large bowl. Add buttermilk and turn to coat each slice. Marinate for 5 minutes.. Place a large heavy skillet over medium-high heat. Add oil to come two-thirds up the side of the pan, and heat oil to 325 degrees. In a wide bowl, mix cornmeal, salt and pepper. Working in batches, remove tomatoes from buttermilk, shaking off excess and dip in cornmeal to coat each side. Shake off the excess cornmeal.. Categories     Side Dish     Appetizer     Snack     Brunch

Time 40m

Yield 6

Number Of Ingredients 6

4 green tomatoes
Salt (to taste)
Freshly ground black pepper (to taste)
Vegetable shortening (or part bacon drippings or oil; for frying)
2 large eggs
1 cup cornmeal

Steps:

  • Gather the ingredients.
  • Cut the tomatoes into 1/4-inch to 1/2-inch slices. Lightly sprinkle the slices with salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste.
  • Let the tomatoes stand for 10 to 15 minutes and then pat them dry with paper towels.
  • Heat about 1/2 inch of shortening, bacon drippings, or oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  • Beat the eggs in a wide, shallow bowl. In another bowl, add the cornmeal. Dip the tomato slices in the eggs and then in the cornmeal to coat thoroughly.
  • When the oil is hot-about 360 F-add several of the coated tomato slices, careful not to overcrowd the pan. Fry them in the hot fat until the bottoms are golden brown, about 3 minutes. Gently turn the slices and fry the other side until browned.
  • Remove the fried tomato slices to paper towels to drain and then transfer to a cooling rack. Sprinkle with salt to taste. Keep them warm in a low oven as you fry subsequent batches.
  • Serve the fried green tomatoes with Louisiana remoulade sauce , ranch dressing, or spicy chipotle mayonnaise .

KAREN'S FRIED GREEN TOMATOES

Karen's Fried Green Tomatoes image

This recipe comes from my mom and they are, hands down, the best fried green tomatoes. She makes these every summer with fresh tomatoes from her garden. My sister begs her to make them for her as soon as she sees tomatoes growing big and green on the vines. While most recipes call for breadcrumbs and oil, this one calls for flour and has you fry the tomatoes in butter, which helps give these an incredible flavor.

Time 30m

Yield 4

Number Of Ingredients 8

2 large green tomatoes, sliced 1/3-inch thick
2 teaspoons white sugar
½ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
½ cup milk
2 eggs
1 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
1 cup butter

Steps:

  • Season each tomato slice with sugar, salt, and pepper.
  • Beat milk and eggs together in a bowl. Pour flour into another bowl.
  • Gently press each tomato slice into flour to coat; shake off the excess flour. Dip tomato slices into egg mixture, then press again into flour. Place breaded tomato slices onto a plate while breading the rest; do not stack.
  • Melt 1/2 cup butter in a large pan over medium heat. Place tomato slices in melted butter and cook until golden brown on one side, 5 to 7 minutes. Flip and cook on the other side until golden brown. Add more butter as need while frying.

BEST FRIED GREEN TOMATOES

You can also fry up red tomatoes with this recipe but make sure they are not over ripe or they will be mushy. Serve these tomatoes outside with a glass of iced tea one summer night and enjoy the sunset with someone you love.

4 large green tomatoes
2 eggs
½ cup milk
1 cup all-purpose flour
½ cup cornmeal
½ cup bread crumbs
2 teaspoons coarse kosher salt
¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
1 quart vegetable oil for frying

Steps:

  • Slice tomatoes 1/2 inch thick. Discard the ends.
  • Whisk eggs and milk together in a medium-size bowl. Scoop flour onto a plate. Mix cornmeal, bread crumbs and salt and pepper on another plate. Dip tomatoes into flour to coat. Then dip the tomatoes into milk and egg mixture. Dredge in breadcrumbs to completely coat.

If you're not frying your green tomatoes in bacon grease then you have lost half of the great flavor! No self-respecting Southerner fries their green tomatoes in anything but bacon grease!

Provided by BONO1

⅓ cup all-purpose flour
¾ cup cornmeal
¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
1 egg
¼ cup milk
1 green tomato, cut into 1/4 inch slices
