Homemade baby food is a smart choice, as you know exactly what you're giving your sweet little baby. Once you've introduced carrots and apples to your baby separately, you can combine them into one puree for a delicious meal your baby is sure to enjoy.

2 carrots, peeled and sliced, or more to taste
1 apple- peeled, cored, and diced
4 teaspoons breast milk

Steps:

  • Place carrots in a saucepan and cover with water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes. Add apple, and simmer until soft, about 5 minutes more. Drain.
  • Combine cooked carrots and apple with milk in a blender or food processor; and puree until smooth. Allow to cool before serving.

1 lb baby carrots
1 cup water
1/2 cup apple juice or 1/2 cup orange juice
1 tablespoon butter
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 ground ginger
1/4 teaspoon dill weed

Steps:

  • Place carrots in saucepan with water and bring to boil for about 10 minutes (stirring occasionally) or until carrots are crisp-tender. May need more or less time depending on size and girth of your baby carrots.
  • Drain carrots. Return to saucepan with remaining ingredients and cook over med-high heat for about 5 more minutes.

I love carrot cake, but I'm not fond of the texture of shredded carrots. I got this recipe from a former boss, Debra. Love it! Note: I haven't tried it, but I'm sure this will make awesome cupcakes!

2 cups all-purpose flour
2 cups sugar
1 cup canola oil
4 eggs
2 (4 ounce) jars carrots, baby food
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons baking soda
2 teaspoons cinnamon
2 teaspoons vanilla
1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese
1 (16 ounce) box powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla

Steps:

  • Cake method: Preheat oven to 350ºF.
  • Grease and flour a 9x13 baking pan.
  • Place first 9 ingredients (through 2 teaspoons vanilla) in a large mixing bowl.
  • Beat with electric beaters or mixer paddle for 2 minutes on medium speed.
  • Pour the batter into the prepared pan.
  • Bake in 350ºF oven for 30 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.
  • Allow the cake to cool completely; prepare icing in the meantime.

  • Icing Method: In a medium bowl, combine final three ingredients.
  • Beat until smooth and fluffy.
  • Ice completely cooled cake.
  • Grab your own piece before anyone else knows it's done!

  • Peel carrots and chop into chunks. Try to make the carrot chunks around the same size so they will finish cooking around the same time. The smaller the chunks, the faster they will cook.
  • Fill a pot with about 1 inch of water, add carrots to a steamer basket and place inside of the pot. Bring water to a low boil, cover with lid and steam carrots for 15-20 minutes, or until fork tender. The cook time will depend on the size of your carrots.
  • Once carrots are tender remove pot from heat and allow carrots to a cool a bit before transferring to a blender or food processor. Puree carrots in the blender or food processor, adding liquid (breast milk, formula or water) as needed to get the desired consistency. If using water, the water leftover from steaming or boiling the carrots works great.
  • Transfer carrot puree into storage containers and store in the fridge for 3 days or freezer for 1 month.
