TISANA

Tisana image

Tisana is a fabulous party drink from Venezuela. It is fruity and light and traditionally served without alcohol at children's birthday celebrations. It is easy to make ahead of time, and it keeps refrigerated in a pitcher. If making for children simply substitute wine with Sprite or 7-UP.

La Tizana (Tropical Venezuelan Fruit Drink) Recipe image

La tizana is a classic Venezuelan drink, enjoyed at birthday parties, at the beach, in the summer, with an afternoon snack - really for any occasion.

Provided by Marian Blazes

Categories     Beverage

Time 10m

Yield 10

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 medium pineapple
1 mango (or papaya)
15 strawberries
1 1/2 cups green or red grapes
2 ripe bananas
3 oranges
2 to 3 cups orange juice
1 can frozen limeade mix
1/4 grenadine

Steps:

  • Gather the ingredients.
  • Peel and chop the pineapple, mango and/or papaya, and strawberries into 1/2 inch dice and add to a large pitcher, including any juice.
  • Slice the grapes in half and add to the other fruit.
  • Peel, seed, and chop 2 of the oranges and add.
  • Cut remaining orange into thin slices and set aside for serving on the rim of each glass.
  • Peel and slice the banana into rounds, then slice each round in half. Add bananas to the rest of the fruit. You should have about 6 cups of chopped fruit. (Use any kind of fruit that you have on hand - other good choices include peaches, kiwis, apples, etc).
  • Cover the fruit with about 2 to 3 cups of orange juice and then add the can of frozen limeade mix .
  • Fill the empty can with water twice and add to the fruit mixture.
  • Stir in the grenadine syrup, adding more than 1/4 cup if desired to obtain the desired color.
  • Chill mixture for several hours before serving, allowing the flavors to blend.
  • To serve, fill each glass 2/3 full, including plenty of chopped fruit, then fill to top with club soda, water, more juice (passion fruit juice would be tasty), or alcohol. Serve glass with a slice of orange on the rim and spoon on the side for the fruit.

HOW TO MAKE TISANE: 5 TYPES OF HERBAL TISANES

From masterclass.com
Estimated Reading Time 5 mins
  • Leaf tisanes: Leaf-based tisanes like lemon verbena, peppermint, chamomile, and echinacea are among the most common tisanes. Tisanes like dill and chamomile were often used by ancient Egyptians for their health properties, while mint tisane has long been used for its soothing properties.
  • Fruit tisanes: Fruit tisanes are naturally sweetened, caffeine-free blends of fruit, spices, and herbs that are traditionally made with a hibiscus base.
  • Flower tisanes: Flowers like rose hips and lavender are the most commonly used ingredients in flower tisanes. This herbal tea blend tends to taste herbaceous and vegetal, rather than like perfume.
  • Spice and root tisanes: Spicers like cardamom and fennel deliver big flavor in a tisane. Using crushed fresh cardamom, caraway, fennel seeds or leaves, or licorice (star anise) in a tisane is an exercise in restraint and balance: using too much and the tisane may taste bitter, but the right amount of spice can enhance the character of these harmonious ingredients.
  • Toasted whole grain tisanes: Toasted whole grains like barley create a distinctly savory tisane. Versions of a barley tisane, like agua de cebada, often include sugar and lemon or lime juice to taste; the steeped grains can be strained out before consuming or left in the drink.
