The sidecar is a classic cocktail made with Cognac, orange liqueur, and lemon juice. It's equally appropriate at a backyard barbecue or a fancy dinner party! Try some of our favorite variations, too!

2 ounce Cognac (Rémy Martin V.S.O.P.)
3/4 ounce Cointreau
3/4 ounce lemon juice, freshly squeezed
1/4 ounce simple syrup
Lemon twist (for garnish)

Steps:

  • Shake: Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker filled with ice, and shake until cold to the touch.
  • Strain: Strain into a chilled coupe or cocktail glass
  • Enjoy: Garnish with a twist of lemon

The Ritz Hotel in Paris claims to have created this cocktail in the early 20th century. The potent combination of Cognac and orange-flavored liqueur shaken until ice cold with lemon juice is a timeless classic.

1 teaspoon white sugar
2 fluid ounces Cognac
1 fluid ounce orange-flavored liqueur (such as Cointreau®)
½ fluid ounce lemon juice
1 cup ice cubes

Steps:

  • Sprinkle sugar on a small plate. Lightly wet half the rim of of a coupe glass with a damp paper towel. Dip the moistened rim in sugar to coat. Set the glass in the refrigerator to chill.
  • Combine Cognac, orange-flavored liqueur, and lemon juice in a cocktail shaker. Add ice, cover, and shake until chilled. Strain into the chilled, sugar-rimmed coupe.

ice cubes
½ fluid ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice
½ fluid ounce Cointreau or triple sec
1 fluid ounce brandy
1 lemon wedge

Steps:

  • Fill a cocktail shaker 3/4 full with ice cubes. Pour in lemon juice, Cointreau, and brandy. Cover and shake vigorously for about 30 seconds until the outside of the shaker becomes cold and frosty. Strain into a martini glass and garnish with a wedge of lemon.
