Swiss Chard Chips image

Baked swiss chard leaves with sesame seeds and olive oil. If done correctly they turn into cool little crispy leaves!

Provided by Nick

Time 15m

Yield Serves 4 as a snack

Number Of Ingredients 4

1 pound of swiss chard, washed, dried, and ribs cut out.
2-3 Tablespoons olive oil
Sesame seeds (opt.)
Kosher salt

Steps:

  • 1) Wash chard well. Cut out ribs from each leaf. Dry leafs really well with paper towels.
  • 2) Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  • 3) Toss chard with olive oil and sesame seeds if you're using them.
  • 4) Spread out chard leaves on baking sheets, making sure the leaves don't overlap. You'll probably have to work in batches.
  • 5) Bake leaves for 4 minutes, then check them. Some might be done, some might need flipped and cooked for another minute or so.
  • 6) Let chips cool for a few minutes before eating.

SWISS CHARD FIRECRACKER CHIPS

Swiss Chard Firecracker Chips image

Does anyone remember those firecracker saltines? I love those. I didn't have any crackers on hand, but as luck would have it - my garden is exploding with Swiss Chard again this year. So I figure if you can make baked kale chips - why not Swiss Chard? I combine the two and what a great combination! The Swiss Chard has a great flavor baked and when combined with the spicy ranch flavor it's a snack that will be a keeper! Southern Food With Flare

Categories     Chips

Number Of Ingredients 5

2 large swiss chard bunches, cleaned, dried, stemmed, and torn into large pieces
2 teaspoon(s) vegetable oil
- 1 to 2 teaspoons crushed red pepper to taste
- 2 to 3 teaspoons ranch dressing mix - powder seasoning
PREHEAT OVEN TO 350 DEGREES

Steps:

  • In a large mixing bowl combine chard and oil. Stir to coat evenly. Sprinkle with red pepper flakes, and ranch dressing mix. Stir until well coated.
  • Place chard on baking sheets covered with parchment paper - single layer.
  • Place in oven and watch CLOSELY - you don't want them to burn. The outer chips will cook quicker than the ones in the center. Remove the chips with they are crispy.
  • You can store leftover (if there are any) in airtight containers. Enjoy!

SPAGHETTI AND SWISS CHARD WITH GARLIC CHIPS

Spaghetti and Swiss Chard With Garlic Chips image

Executive food editor Kemp Minifie brought the idea for this restorative pasta from her own home. Everyone in the test kitchen loved the briny intensity of feta and olives offset by sweet currants and slightly bitter chard. The garlic doesn’t stay crisp for long, so be sure to serve immediately.

Yield Makes 4 to 6 servings

Number Of Ingredients 9

1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil
1 head garlic, cloves peeled and thinly sliced lengthwise
1 medium onion, finely chopped
1/2 cup dried currants
2 pounds green Swiss chard, stems and center ribs finely chopped and leaves coarsely chopped separately
1/2 cup water
1 pound spaghetti
1/2 cup Kalamata olives, cut into slivers
6 ounces feta, crumbled (1 1/2 cups)

Steps:

  • Heat oil in a 12-inch heavy skillet over medium heat until it shimmers, then cook garlic, stirring, until golden, about 3 minutes. Transfer garlic with a slotted spoon to paper towels to drain.
  • Cook onion in oil remaining in skillet over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until softened, 3 to 5 minutes. Add currants and cook, stirring, until plumped, about 1 minute.
  • Stir chard stems into onion mixture with water and 3/4 teaspoon each of salt and pepper. Cook, covered, over medium-high heat until almost tender, about 5 minutes. Stir in chard leaves and cook, covered, until stems and leaves are tender, about 5 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, cook spaghetti in a pasta pot of boiling salted water (2 tablespoons salt for 5 quarts water) until al dente. Reserve 1 cup pasta-cooking water and drain spaghetti.
  • Toss spaghetti with chard, olives, and 1/2 cup cooking water, adding more cooking water if necessary. Season with salt and pepper. Serve sprinkled with feta and garlic chips.

  • Swiss Chard and Pecan Pesto. Just like spinach, Swiss chard blends beautifully with basil in a cheesy, nutty pesto. Instead of the usual pine nuts, pecans add lots of toasty flavor here.
  • Chard Tacos. This meatless taco is surprisingly satisfying and easily becomes vegetarian by using vegetable broth in place of chicken. "Quick, healthy, and a great way to get some greens into your diet," says reviewer jtguf87.
  • Pan Fried Swiss Chard. Crispy bacon, garlic, and lemon will make this simple Swiss chard side the star of your table. Follow reviewer naples34102's lead and add the chopped chard stems to the pan with the leaves and garlic.

  • Lentil Lemon Soup. Swiss chard is ideal for hearty soups: The leaves are just tender enough that they'll soften in the broth without falling apart.
  • Sautéed Swiss Chard with Mushrooms and Roasted Red Peppers. Recipe creator BramptonMommyof2 invented this mushroom and Swiss chard sauté using what she had in the fridge, and the results were worth repeating.
  • Fennel and Apple Salad. While usually sautéed or simmered, Swiss chard can also be enjoyed fresh, just like lettuce or spinach. It's the tender counterpart to crunchy fennel and apple in this restaurant-worthy salad.
  • Italian-Style Swiss Chard. Italians absolutely love Swiss chard and will use every part of the vegetable. The pink stalks really pop in this traditional sauté, seasoned simply with crushed red pepper and fresh garlic.
