Time 1h

Number Of Ingredients 11

8 strips bacon
2 large yellow onions, (thinly sliced)
1 teaspoon granulated sugar
3 tablespoons white wine
½ cup sour cream
3 ounces cream cheese, (room temperature)
½ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
2 cups Gruyere cheese, (shredded and divided)
½ teaspoon kosher salt
¼ teaspoon black pepper
parsley, (for garnish)

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 400°F.
  • In an oven-safe skillet (8-10 inches), cook bacon over medium-high heat.
  • Remove bacon from the skillet and place on a plate lined with a paper towel to let cool. Do not clean out the skillet.
  • To the skillet with bacon grease, add the onions and sugar. Cook 20 minutes over medium heat, stirring often. (When onions start to stick to the pan, scrape them up.)
  • Add the wine. Cook down to half (2-3 minutes).
  • Add the sour cream, cream cheese, Worcestershire sauce, 1 cup shredded cheese, salt, and pepper.
  • (If you want a thicker dip, move the ingredients to a smaller over-safe dish, such as a 6 inch skillet. If you don't mind a thinner dip, continue on with the skillet you cooked everything in thus far.)
  • Crumble the cooked bacon and add most of it to the cream cheese mixture, reserving a little for the topping.
  • Top with the remaining cup of cheese and reserved bacon.
  • Bake for 20 minutes, or until the cheese is hot and bubbly. Garnish with parsley before serving.
  • Serve warm with baguettes, pretzels, chips, crackers, or bagel crisps.

SOUR CREAM AND ONION DIP

Sour Cream and Onion Dip image

Take plenty of time to properly caramelize a mixture of onions and shallots and you'll be greatly rewarded with a depth of flavor that you would never get from a powdered packet. Resist the urge to cook them at a higher temperature in order to rush the process - they'll burn before they brown and soften. The addition of Greek yogurt might seem unusual, but it provides a lightness and tang that sour cream can't deliver by itself.

Provided by Alison Roman

Categories     dips and spreads, appetizer

Time 1h15m

Yield 6 to 8 servings

Number Of Ingredients 10

2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 pound yellow onions (about 3 medium), thinly sliced
2 shallots, thinly sliced
Kosher salt, freshly ground pepper
1 cup sour cream
1 cup full fat Greek yogurt or sour cream
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1 clove garlic, finely grated
Olive oil, for drizzling
1/4 cup finely chopped chives

Steps:

  • Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  • Add onions and shallots and season with salt and pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until onions are softened and starting to turn a nice golden brown, 15 to 20 minutes. Reduce heat to low and continue to cook, stirring often to make sure the onions don't stick along the bottom of the skillet. Cook until onions are a deep golden brown and reduced by about half their original size, another 45 to 55 minutes. Resist the urge to turn up the heat to make them caramelize faster. It will lead to burning.
  • Transfer onions and shallots to a cutting board and finely chop. Place in a large bowl along with sour cream, yogurt, lemon juice and garlic. Season with salt and pepper.
  • Transfer to a serving bowl and drizzle with olive oil, season with pepper and sprinkle with chives.

  • Easy Mexican Sour Cream Dip. Picture this: It’s Saturday afternoon. You’re lounging on the couch in your PJs, binge-watching House of the Dragon. Then, your phone dings.
  • Sour Cream-Parmesan Cheese Pesto Dip. This low-carb, three-ingredient dip is just as easy to make as the recipe above. You’ll need sour cream, grated Parmesan, and pesto (use store-bought!).
  • Homemade Sour Cream and Onion Dip. I’ve always adored Dean’s French onion dip. It had to be Dean’s, or it wasn’t worth eating. And this homemade sour cream and onion dip is a spot-on copycat!
  • Garlic Dip. This two-minute garlic dip will make you weak in the knees. It tastes terrific and smells even more remarkable. It’s also effortless to whip up.
  • Sour Cream and Chive Dip. What if sour cream and onion is your favorite dip, but you’re all out of onions? No problem! Grab some chives instead! It has the same fantastic, earthy, and herby taste and stays just as silky smooth.
  • Buffalo Dipping Sauce. Are you the kind of person who can’t get enough buffalo sauce on your wings? Then, this recipe is for you. You’ll take regular buffalo dipping sauce and combine it with sour cream and pepper.
  • Zesty Sour Cream Dip. If you like spicy foods, but don’t love the acidity of buffalo sauce, try this zippy Sriracha dip instead. It’s still got plenty of heat, but the spice hits differently on the tongue.
  • Lime Jalapeño Sour Cream Dip. Want something with a bit of a zesty kick? Try this lime and jalapeño dip. Just blend sour cream with jalapeño slices and juice (from a jar), lime juice, garlic powder, and salt and pepper.
  • Hidden Valley Ranch Dip with Bacon & Cheddar. Do you like cheese and bacon? How about ranch dressing? You do? Then this is the sour cream dip for you!
  • Creamy Whipped Feta Dip. What could be better than salty feta cheese blended with sour cream? Not much! This dip looks like – and almost has the same consistency as – hummus.
