- Cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs and vanilla. Combine dry ingredients and add to mixture. Stir in apples. Spoon into greased 11 x 13 pan. Bake at 350 for 45-50 minutes or until the toothpick comes out clean.
GERMAN APPLE CAKE I
This German Apple Cake is a moist dense cake that keeps well. It has been a family favorite for twenty years.

Steps:
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour one 9x13 inch cake pan.
- In a mixing bowl; beat oil and eggs with an electric mixer until creamy. Add the sugar and vanilla and beat well.
- Combine the flour salt, baking soda, and ground cinnamon together in a bowl. Slowly add this mixture to the egg mixture and mix until combined. The batter will be very thick. Fold in the apples by hand using a wooden spoon. Spread batter into the prepared pan.
- Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 45 minutes or until cake tests done. Let cake cool on a wire rack. Once cake is cool serve with a dusting of confectioners' sugar or with a Cream Cheese Frosting.

NANA'S GERMAN APPLE CAKE
This is a slight variation of a recipe of my Grandmother's. It is very simple to make. If you can't find vanilla bean paste you can use vanilla extract. This German Apple Cake is great as a dessert or even as breakfast.

Steps:
- Cream the butter, sugar and vanilla extract.
- In a seperate bowl mix together the flour, salt, baking powder and nutmeg.
- Slowly add the dry ingredients into the mixer with the creamed butter and mix.
- Add the eggs and mix until everything is fully incorporated.
- Roll dough into a ball and chill in the fridge for 1 hour.
- Peaheat oven to 350°F.
- Put half of dough into a greased and flowered 9 in round baking pan or pie pan and press down to pack.
- Cover with chopped apples.
- Cover with the rest of dough and sprinkle with cinnamon and turbinado sugar.
- Bake for about 50-60 minutes at 350°F or until the top becomes golden brown.

- Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Grease an 8-inch square cake pan.
- Stir sugar, milk, vegetable oil, and egg together until well blended. Add flour, baking powder, and salt; stir until incorporated. Pour into the prepared cake pan and sprinkle chopped cranberries over the top.
- Combine flour, sugar, and butter for the topping in a bowl and mix until crumbly. Sprinkle over cranberries in the cake pan.
- Bake in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, about 25 minutes. Remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly. Serve warm.
