10 HAWAII PUPU DISHES THAT ARE THE LIFE OF THE PARTY
From hawaiimagazine.com
- Cone sushi. Also known as inari (or inari zushi), this is a quick and simple local favorite. In inari, the “cone” wrapper that describes this sushi variety, is age, a fried bean curd.
- Boiled peanuts. The Hawaii version of this classic snack, believed to have Chinese roots, is a great low-maintenance option for those of us who can’t cook.
- Sashimi. Want an easy in with strangers at the company holiday party? Bring sashimi. Finely trimmed, raw or marinated sashimi is one of Hawaii’s popular pupu, especially for New Year’s Eve, so plan accordingly—fish is going to go fast!
- Pipikaula. Most easily described as “Hawaiian beef jerky,” this salted and dried beef delicacy can’t be beat. It’s spicy, without being leather dry, and can be flavored in so many different ways (just ask Helena’s).
- Smoked tako. No matter what marinade and seasonings you choose—kim chee, misoyaki, onion, limu (seafood)—cut your tako, or octopus, up into modest bite-sized pieces and you’ve got one of the most delicious and dynamic pupu on your hands.
- Char siu. This requires some portion control, but roasted Chinese pork makes for some great snacking.
- Pulehu steak, pupu-style. Same thing applies to this steak entree—it’s a pupu if you cut it into small enough pieces! Pulehu is the Hawaiian word for “to broil,” and refers to a meat that’s rubbed first with a seasoning mix, usually Hawaiian salt.
- Filipino lumpia egg rolls. This version of egg rolls, prepared Filipino-style, is filled with mined meats and vegetables. A popular favorite, found at all Filipino festivals, restaurants and Hawaii parties.
- Edamame. Can’t go wrong with a bowl of soy beans. Just serve them with a sweet and sour dipping sauce or with some simple shoyu and you’re good to grind.

- Hawaiian Guava Cake. Guava is an ingredient you don’t use very often, which is why it’s so great to have a dessert recipe that integrates it effortlessly.
- Hawaiian Pizza. This is one of those Hawaiian dishes you’ve probably had before. There’s a great mix of flavors on this pizza that gives it such a unique profile, but it’s good enough that anyone can enjoy it.
- Haupia (Coconut Pudding) This is one of the simplest desserts to make and it has hardly any ingredients. This was originally used as a topping for cakes, but it’s so good the Hawaiians turned it into their own dessert.
- Hawaiian Chicken. Hawaiian dishes do it best when it comes to mixing tropical flavors with satiating meats. This Hawaiian chicken recipe is no different because you get all the savory flavors of your chicken mixed with the sweet and tangy flavors of pineapple.
- Hawaiian Butter Mochi. Butter mochi is absolutely delicious to make and the coconut is what gives it that unique Hawaiian flavor. The recipe is so easy to make too, so you’ll end up throwing it into your weekly rotation as a nice treat.
- Furikake Snack Mix. This is a tropical version of your trail mix because it has some of the same great flavors but adds a slight ocean twist. Instead of just pouring in the regular rice cereal, you’ll be adding some aji nori furikake, which is a seasoned seaweed and sesame rice topping.
- White Chocolate Macadamia Nut Cookies. You might not have known the macadamia nut was a treasure on the island of Hawaii, but locals have been finding creative ways of adding it to recipes for generations.
- Hawaiian Fried Rice. You’ve probably had Asian fried rice but this Hawaiian twist gives it a more sweet and tangy balance. You’ll get everything that makes Hawaiian cuisine special in this fried rice, like pineapples, ham, and peppers.
- Mai Tai. You haven’t had a tropical drink until you’ve tried a mai tai. It’s popular in tiki culture because of the exotic flavors and wonderful colors, but you can have it anywhere in the world.
- Hawaiian Chicken Kebabs. Kebabs are one of the easiest meals to make because once you chop up your ingredients you just stick your skewer through them and put everything on the grill till it’s done.
