I found this recipe in a womans life magazine 3 years ago and haven't used anything else since. My Husband is a mechanic for a road construction company and has GREASY, DIRTY clothes. this works great on them. I see there is another soap on the site. Mine is different so thought I would reintroduce it. This detergent does not make suds, so don't be alarmed. Also good for the new HE washers. With this recipe you might want to eliminate the use of laundry softener even.

LIQUID LAUNDRY DETERGENT
3 pint(s) water
1/3 - bar fels naptha soap, grated
1/2 cup(s) washing soda (arm and hammer, not baking soda though)
1/2 cup(s) 20 mule team borax
2 gallon bucket to mix it in
1 quart(s) hot water
POWDERED LAUNDRY DETERGENT
1 cup(s) fels naptha soap
1/2 cup(s) washing soda
1/2 cup(s) 20 mule team borax

Steps:

Mix grated Fels Napth soap in a saucepan with 3 pints hot water and heat on low until dissolved. Sitr in Washing Soda and Borax. Stir until it slightly thickens, and remove from heat. Add 1 quart hot water to the 2 gallon bucket. Add soap mixture, and mix well. Fill bucket with additional hot water to make 2 gallons and mix well. Set aside for 24 hours until mixture thickens. I try and stir it once and awhile. If you don't by the next day it is like jello and you just have to stir until it mixes. (might have to use your hands even). Use 1/2 cup of mixture per load
For the powdered detergent just mix and store in airtight container. Use 2 tablespoons for light loads and 3 tablespoons for heavy loads. to make a large batch- grate 6 bars fels Napth soap and then add 3 cups Washing Soda and 3 cups Borax.

In a food processor with a grating attachment, shred the bar of soap (or do it manually if you'd rather, but use the finest grate on your grater). Remove the grating attachment and add the washing soda, baking soda, and salt to the food processor then pulse together until a fine powder results (or if you're doing it manually, just mix the finely shredded soap and the powders together in a bowl).
In a large pot, bring about 4 cups of the water to a boil. Gradually add the washing soda, baking soda, and salt. Stir until dissolved.
