Hoisin Glazed Asian Turkey Meatballs with ginger, sesame and water chestnuts. The simple hoisin glaze is a mixture of hoisin sauce, lime and cilantro, and gives these lean appetizers a sweet and spicy kick! Serve them for a football snack or appetizer and watch them disappear!

2 tablespoons reduced-sodium Tamari or Soy Sauce
1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil
2 teaspoon finely grated fresh ginger root, preferably grated with a rasp-style grater
1 teaspoon Sambal Oelek sauce (see *ingredient note) or 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper
2 scallions, minced plus sliced scallion greens for garnish, divided
1 egg
20 ounces 90% lean ground turkey
1 cup panko
1/2 cup drained, finely chopped water chestnuts
1/2 cup purchased Hoisin Sauce (see *ingredient note)
2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro leaves (coriander)
2 tablespoon freshly squeezed lime juice
Black and/or white sesame seeds, for garnish

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Line a large baking sheet with aluminum foil.
  • Whisk Tamari or soy sauce, sesame oil, ginger and sambal or crushed red pepper in a large bowl. Add 2 minced scallions, egg, turkey, panko and water chestnuts and stir to combine.
  • Drop turkey mixture by rounded tablespoons onto the prepared baking sheet, gently re-shaping into ball shapes with moistened hands. Transfer to the oven. Bake until the meat is cooked through, 17 to 19 minutes. Let rest 10 minutes.
  • Stir Hoisin sauce, cilantro and lime juice in a large bowl. Add half of the cooked meatballs and gently stir to coat. Transfer to a platter. Repeat with the remaining meatballs. Sprinkle with the remaining sliced scallions and sesame seeds and serve hot with toothpicks.

1/4 cup dry bread crumbs
3 tablespoons chopped green onions
3 tablespoons minced fresh parsley
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 teaspoon minced fresh gingerroot
1-1/2 pounds lean ground beef
SAUCE:
1/4 cup rice vinegar
1/4 cup hoisin sauce
2 tablespoons water
2 tablespoons sesame oil
2 tablespoons reduced-sodium soy sauce
1 tablespoon honey
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 teaspoon minced fresh gingerroot

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, combine the first 8 ingredients. Crumble beef over mixture and mix lightly but thoroughly., Shape into scant 1-in. balls. Place in a 13x9-in. baking dish coated with cooking spray. Bake, uncovered, at 350° until meat is no longer pink, 20-25 minutes., Meanwhile, in a small saucepan, combine the sauce ingredients; heat through. Serve with meatballs.

1 pound lean ground beef
½ cup panko bread crumbs
¼ cup soy sauce, divided
1 egg
3 cloves garlic, minced, divided
1 teaspoon minced fresh ginger root
½ cup hoisin sauce
1 green onion, minced
2 tablespoons rice vinegar
2 teaspoons sesame oil
1 (16 ounce) package frozen fried rice (such as Kahiki® Japanese-Style Fried Rice)

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Grease a baking sheet.
  • Combine beef, bread crumbs, 1 tablespoon soy sauce, egg, 2 cloves minced garlic, and ginger in a bowl and mix thoroughly. Form into golf-ball-sized meatballs and place on the prepared baking sheet.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until meatballs are no longer pink inside, 10 to 12 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, combine remaining soy sauce, remaining garlic, hoisin sauce, green onion, vinegar, and sesame oil in a small bowl. Whisk sauce until well blended.
  • Place frozen fried rice bag on a plate and heat in the microwave oven until thoroughly heated, 6 to 8 minutes. Peel back film and stir. Re-cover and heat for 1 minute more.
  • Transfer cooked meatballs to a serving bowl. Pour sauce over meatballs to coat. Serve meatballs over fried rice.

10 oz. ground turkey
3 cloves garlic, minced
2 scallions, thinly sliced
1 zucchini, sliced and quartered
1 1-inch piece of ginger, minced
1 T. Sambal Oelek
1/4 c. hoisin sauce
1/4 c. Panko breadcrumbs

Steps:

  • Heat 2 teaspoons olive oil in a medium pan until hot. Add the garlic, ginger and white bottoms of the scallions. Cook, stirring occasionally, 1 to 2 minutes until softened and fragrant. Transfer to a bowl. Add the ground turkey, breadcrumbs, the sambal oelek and 1 tablespoon of the hoisin sauce to the bowl. Season with salt and pepper and mix until combined. Form the mixture into 12 to 14 meatballs. Heat 2 teaspoons of olive oil in the medium pan. Add the meatballs and cook, turning often, 4 to 6 minutes or until browned on all sides. Transfer to a plate and keep warm. Add 1 teaspoon olive oil to the pan of fond. Add the zucchini and cook 2 to 3 minutes. Add the browned meatballs, remaining 3 tablespoons of hoisin sauce and 1/2 cup of water to the pan. Cook 3 to 5 minutes or until sauce has thickened. Season with salt and pepper. Can be served over rice or couscous for additional smart points.

Using oiled hands, roll into 16–18 2" balls (they will seem very soft but will firm up as they bake) and place on prepared baking sheet. Bake meatballs until lightly browned and nearly cooked through, 15–18 minutes. Brush remaining 2 Tbsp. hoisin over meatballs. Continue to bake until hoisin has set into a glaze, 3–5 minutes longer.
  • Cook noodles according to package directions. Mix soy sauce, garlic, ginger, sesame oil, vinegar, and sugar in a small bowl until sugar dissolves; set sauce aside.
  • Heat 1 Tbsp. vegetable oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high. Add peas and cook, tossing occasionally, just until they become bright green and partly tender, about 2 minutes. Transfer to a plate. Add remaining 1 Tbsp. oil to skillet along with zucchini and cook, tossing frequently, until al dente, about 1 minute. Add reserved sauce, followed by noodles, sprouts (if using), and peas. Cook, tossing often, just until noodles and vegetables are coated in sauce, about 2 minutes. Season with salt, if needed.
