GERMAN WINE COOKIES

German Wine Cookies image

From an old CD cookbook. These cookies keep up to a year (???) in an airtight container. At least, that's what the recipe says.

Time 30m

Yield 2 dozen

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 cup butter
2 cups sugar
3 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla
1/2 cup sweet wine (Port or Cream Sherry)
5 -5 1/2 cups flour
1 lb powdered sugar
1 -2 tablespoon milk
2 teaspoons vanilla
1/8 teaspoon salt

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Cream butter and sugar together. Beat in eggs, vanilla and wine. Stir in flour, one cup at a time. Dough will be stiff. Roll out dough, on well-floured pastry sheet, to a 1/4 inch thickness. Cut into desired shapes with cookie cutter. Bake on greased cookie sheet for 10 minutes.
  • Make icing by combining above ingredients. (Should be an almost runny consistency). Frost cookies. These cookies will keep for up to one year in an airtight container.

WINE COOKIES

Wine Cookies image

From Jo Ann Shirley's 1978 Cakes and Cookies cookbook. These use sweet wine to flavor the dough and are cut into little rounds. You could leave the nuts off the top if you want to cut down the preparation time or if you just don't like nuts.

OLD GERMAN HONEY COOKIES

Old German Honey Cookies image

I got this recipe from my grandmother who got it from her grandmother. She had to translate it and then figure out measurements. The original recipe called for "enough flour to make a dough". Thankfully grandma knew what kind of dough.

  • In a small bowl, stir the cream and vinegar together and let stand until thickened, about 30 minutes.
  • Preheat the oven to 325°. In a medium bowl, whisk the all-purpose flour with the almond flour, candied orange and lemon peels, cinnamon, cloves, allspice, baking soda, nutmeg and salt. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle, beat the brown sugar with the shortening and molasses at medium speed until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Add the thickened cream and beat until smooth. Add the dry ingredients and beat at low speed just until combined.
  • Line 2 large rimmed baking sheets with parchment paper. Working in 2 batches, using a 2-ounce ice cream scoop or 1/4-cup measure, scoop the dough into mounds on the prepared sheets, spacing them 3 inches apart. Place 3 whole almonds in a star pattern on top of each cookie and, with the palm of your hand, gently flatten each mound slightly.
  • Bake the cookies for about 15 minutes, until lightly browned; rotate the baking sheets from top to bottom and front to back halfway through baking. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheets for 10 minutes, then transfer to a rack and let cool completely.
