Great Northern Bean Stew image

This thick and hearty stew with great northern beans is sure to chase the winter chills away. -Mildred Sherrer, Fort Worth, Texas

1 pound bulk pork sausage
1 cup chopped onion
1 can (15-1/2 ounces) great northern beans, rinsed and drained
1 can (28 ounces) diced tomatoes, undrained
2 cups chopped cabbage
1 cup sliced carrots
1 tablespoon white vinegar
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1/4 teaspoon hot pepper sauce
2 tablespoons minced fresh parsley

Steps:

  • In a large saucepan, cook sausage and onion over medium heat until meat is no longer pink; drain. Add the next 11 ingredients. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 50-60 minutes or until vegetables are tender. , Stir in parsley; cook 5 minutes longer. Freeze option: Freeze cooled stew in freezer containers. To use, partially thaw in refrigerator overnight. Heat through in a saucepan, stirring occasionally and adding a little water if necessary.

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 pound dried great northern beans
3 smoked ham hocks (about 1-1/2 pounds)
3 cans (14-1/2 ounces each) reduced-sodium chicken or beef broth
2 cups water
1 large onion, chopped
1 tablespoon onion powder
1 tablespoon garlic powder
2 teaspoons pepper
Thinly sliced green onions, optional

Steps:

  • Rinse and sort beans. Transfer to a 6-qt. electric pressure cooker. Add ham hocks. Stir in broth, water, onion and seasonings. Lock lid; close pressure-release valve. Adjust to pressure-cook on high for 30 minutes. Let pressure release naturally for 10 minutes; quick-release any remaining pressure. , When cool enough to handle, remove meat from bones; cut ham into small pieces and return to pressure cooker. Serve with a slotted spoon. Sprinkle with green onions if desired.

Easy way to make ham and beans and not have to wait all day for it! I have made this recipe to fit into my 5 qt electronic pressure cooker.

Number Of Ingredients 7

1 1/2 lbs dry white beans
1 1/2 lbs ham
4 1/2 cups water
1 small yellow onion, diced
1 small garlic clove, minced
1 bay leaf
salt & pepper

Steps:

  • Cut up onion, garlic and ham.
  • Rinse beans and remove any that are discolored.
  • Place all ingredients in pressure cooker with seasonings to taste.
  • Turn on high pressure for 25 minutes. (If you have an electronic pressure cooker the meat setting is great for this recipe).
  • Remove bay leaf.
  • Serve with cornbread!

2 pounds smoked kielbasa or Polish sausage, halved and sliced
2 cans (15 ounces each) black beans, rinsed and drained
1 can (15 ounces) great northern beans, rinsed and drained
1 can (15 ounces) thick and zesty tomato sauce
1 medium green pepper, chopped
1 medium onion, chopped
1/2 cup water
5 bacon strips, cooked and crumbled
3 tablespoons brown sugar
2 tablespoons cider vinegar
3 garlic cloves, minced
1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
1/4 teaspoon dried marjoram
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
Hot cooked rice

Steps:

  • In a large skillet, brown the sausage. Transfer to a 4-qt. slow cooker; add the beans, tomato sauce, green pepper, onion, water, bacon, brown sugar, vinegar, garlic, thyme, marjoram and cayenne. Cover and cook on low for 5-6 hours or until vegetables are tender. Serve with rice. Freeze option: Freeze cooled sausage mixture in freezer containers. To use, partially thaw in refrigerator overnight. Heat through in a saucepan, stirring occasionally; add broth or water if necessary.

Add garlic and ½ tsp. red pepper flakes and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 2 minutes. Add wine, bring to a boil, and cook until pan is almost dry, about 5 minutes. Add beans, bay leaves, 1 Tbsp. salt, and 5 cups water. Seal pressure cooker according to manufacturer’s instructions and cook on high pressure 50 minutes. Manually release pressure. Beans should be tender and creamy; if not, reseal and cook 10 minutes longer. Season with more salt if needed.
  • Add tomatoes, breaking up with your hands, and cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until liquid is thickened, tomatoes begin to break down, and beans are very tender, 25–30 minutes. Season with salt, if needed.
  • Serve beans topped with feta, oregano, and more red pepper flakes and drizzled with oil, with lemon for squeezing over.
