SLOW-COOKER GERMAN BRATWURST



Slow-Cooker German Bratwurst image

I created this Old World favorite from a dish I had during my travels. The flavorful entree is perfect for weeknights or special occasions. I like to serve this slow-cooker bratwurst with pasta. —Gerald Hetrick, Erie, Pennsylvania

Number Of Ingredients 7

4 pounds uncooked bratwurst links
3 bottles (12 ounces each) German-style beer or 4-1/2 cups reduced-sodium chicken broth
1 jar (32 ounces) sauerkraut, rinsed and well drained
4 medium Granny Smith apples (about 1-1/4 pounds), cut into wedges
1 medium onion, halved and thinly sliced
1-1/2 teaspoons caraway seeds
1/4 teaspoon pepper

Steps:

  • In batches, in a large nonstick skillet, brown bratwursts over medium-high heat. Transfer to a 7-qt. slow cooker. Add remaining ingredients., Cook, covered, on low 6-8 hours or until a thermometer inserted in sausage reads at least 160°.

8 bratwurst
2 (12 fluid ounce) cans or bottles beer
1 onion, sliced
¾ cup ketchup

Steps:

  • Place bratwurst, beer, onion, and ketchup in a slow cooker. Pour water over mixture until everything is covered. Set slow cooker to HIGH and cook for 4 hours.
  • Preheat an outdoor grill for high heat and lightly oil grate.
  • Grill bratwurst on preheated grill until they are browned, about 5 minutes.

2 (reg. size) cans stewed tomato - Italian style for good flavor
1 small can tomato paste
1 small diced onion
1 medium diced green pepper (red can be used also for extra flavor)
1 Tbsp minced garlic or 2 crushed cloves fresh garlic (1-2 Tbsp. garlic powder can be used also)
1-2 Tbsp Italian seasoning to taste (optional - as the sausage or bratwursts cook it will add natural flavor to the sauce)
1-2 dash es hot sauce (optional)
6-8 bratwurst or pork sausage links
Hoagie style bakery buns
Sliced provolone or mozzarella cheese & Kraft grated Parmesan cheese
Sliced banana pepper rings in juice (mild or hot) to garnish top & extra kick

Steps:

  • Mix the first 7 items together in a med. or large crock-pot - add the bratwurst or sausage they can be frozen or fresh.
  • Cook on LOW all day if using frozen or for 4-5 hours (until hot) if fresh. Stir a few times (if you can).
  • Serve on a hoagie bun with one of the recommended cheeses on the bottom of the bun (helps to keep the juices contained & the hot links will melt the cheese to the bun. Put tomato sauce the links cooked in on top and garnish with banana pepper rings and parmesan cheese.

5 medium potatoes, peeled and cubed
1 can (27 ounces) sauerkraut, rinsed and well drained
1 medium tart apple, chopped
1 small onion, chopped
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt, optional

Steps:

  • In a large skillet, brown bratwurst on all sides. In a 5-qt. slow cooker, combine the remaining ingredients. Stir in bratwurst and pan drippings. Cover and cook on high for 4-6 hours or until potatoes and apple are tender.

2 sweet onions, sliced
3 or 4 cloves garlic, finely chopped
4 tablespoons butter
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
3 bottles (12 oz each) beer
Sauerkraut and mustard, if desired

Steps:

  • In 10-inch nonstick skillet, cook bratwurst over medium-high heat, turning frequently, just until outsides are brown. Place in 5- to 6-quart slow cooker.
  • Top with onion slices, garlic, butter, salt and pepper. Pour in beer.
  • Cover and cook on High heat setting 4 hours or Low heat setting 7 to 8 hours.
  • Serve with sauerkraut and mustard.
