Crispy Fried Mushrooms With Chipotle Mayonnaise Dip image

Fried mushrooms are whole button mushrooms coated with a yummy batter and then deep-fried. They make a delicious and perfectly crispy snack dipped in an easy-to-make spicy mayo sauce. Enjoy!!

Number Of Ingredients 10

1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon mustard
1/2 teaspoon paprika (regular or smoked)
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
salt and pepper
1/2 cup buttermilk, well shaken
1 teaspoon chipotle hot pepper sauce (optional)
8 ounces whole button mushrooms
crisco oil (for frying)

Steps:

  • MUSHROOMS: Combine first six ingredients in resealable plastic bag.
  • In a medium bowl, combine buttermilk and pepper sauce. Add mushrooms and let soak for about 5 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, heat 2-3 inches oil in deep fryer or large deep saucepan to 375°F.
  • Remove mushrooms from buttermilk mixture and toss in flour mixture. Carefully drop 2-3 mushrooms in hot oil and fry 2-3 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Drain on paper towel-lined plate.
  • CHIPOTLE MAYONNAISE SAUCE: Combine mayonnaise and hot pepper sauce and serve with mushrooms.

Fried Mushrooms have long been a favorite appetizer in American food culture. Mushrooms impart a fifth taste sense called umami, which is savory. Fried and dipped in sauces, typically Ranch, the combination of natural tastes of the mushroom and the crunchy, seasoned crust is undoubtedly the reason they are one of the most favorite appetizers. This recipe is a favorite of mine and I'm sure it will be a favorite of yours too.

Number Of Ingredients 8

8 ounces whole fresh mushrooms, wiped clean and trimmed
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon dry mustard
1/4 teaspoon paprika
1 pinch fresh ground black pepper
1/2 cup buttermilk
lard (for frying)

Steps:

  • Combine flour, salt, mustard, paprika and pepper in large resealable plastic bag.
  • Pour buttermilk in small bowl. Add mushrooms. Toss to coat.
  • Place mushrooms in bag with flour mixture. Shake to coat.
  • Heat deep-fryer to 375 degrees (High).
  • Fry a few mushrooms at a time 2 to 3 minutes, or until deep golden brown.
  • Drain on paper towels.
  • Serve with your favorite dipping sauce (Ranch).

1/2 cup flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/8 teaspoon pepper
5 cups Corn Chex, crushed
1 egg, separated
1/3 cup milk
1 teaspoon sugar
1 lb fresh mushrooms, cleaned
oil (for frying)

Steps:

  • Thoroughly mix flour, salt, baking powder and pepper.
  • Beat egg yolk and milk together.
  • Blend in the dry ingredients.
  • Beat egg white until foamy, add sugar and beat until stiff but not dry.
  • Fold into milk mixture.
  • Dip mushrooms in batter.
  • Drain.
  • Roll in Chex cereal crumbs.
  • Drop in a few at a time into deep, hot oil (385 degrees).
  • Fry until golden brown, turning once.
