Time 15m

Yield 2 pies

Number Of Ingredients 14

2 3/4 cups all purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 1/4 teaspoons baking powder
1 cup softened unsalted butter
1 1/2 cups packed light brown sugar
1/2 cup granulated sugar
3 large eggs
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
3 cups semisweet chocolate chips
2 cups chopped optional walnuts
2 pints (4 cups) heavy cream
1/4 cup confectioner's sugar
1/4 cup miniature semisweet chocolate chips

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 °F. Grease 2 (9-inch) pie plates; set aside.
  • In a large bowl, sift together the flour, salt, baking soda and baking powder. In the bowl of an electric mixer, cream together butter, brown sugar and granulated sugar. Add the eggs, 1 at a time, beating until incorporated. Beat in the vanilla. Add flour mixture, a little at a time, and mix until fully combined. Fold in the 3 cups chocolate chips and, if desired, the walnuts. Divide the dough between the prepared pie plates and smooth the tops with a spatula.
  • Bake about 30 minutes or until pies are golden and slightly firm to the touch but still soft. If the pies begin to darken too much before they are baked through, cover with foil and continue baking. Let pies cool completely on a wire rack.
  • While the pies cool, whip the cream and confectioner's sugar until soft peaks form (tips curl). Fold in the chocolate chips. Refrigerate whipped cream until ready to use. Spread the whipped cream over the pies and serve.

WHIFFLETREE CHOCOLATE CHIP PIE

Whiffletree Chocolate Chip Pie image

I snagged this recipe from my mother's recipe box This is by far and away my favorite dessert my momma made when I was growing up. A word of warning: the recipe says 6-8 servings, but I'd suggest 10-12 servings because it's soooo rich! Here are my mom's notes & the recipe. January, 1985 - Bon Appetit Page 8 - RSVP I think I have finally tasted the ultimate chocolate chip cookie; funny thing is, it is not a cookie at all, but a pie - the chocolate chip pie served at the Whiffletree Inn in Ilion, New York. I would be willing to bet that I am not the only Bon Appetit reader who woud like to know how this dense and chewy treat is prepared.

CHOCOLATE CHIP PIE

Chocolate Chip Pie image

If you like chocolate, try this pie -- just once. It is good warmed and served with vanilla ice cream. Someone in the family used to make this and wouldn't share the recipe, but after I requested it so often, (and she got tired of making it for me), she gave in and here it is.
