KUNG PAO SLOPPY JOES
What happens when you combine two favorites into one easy dish? Clean plates, that's what! My family loves Chinese food, but takeout can be expensive and not always the healthiest. This colorful stovetop kung pao sloppy joe recipe will please everyone at dinnertime, including the kids. My husband prefers to skip the bun and eat it over brown rice or rolled in lettuce wrap. -Julie Peterson, Crofton, Maryland

ANCIENT CHINESE SECRET SLOPPY JOES
So you want the secret-eh? To be honest, it's not Chinese but Vietnamese, and it's not ancient, only about 25 years old. I love it because it's American born, American made. With a story straight out of Chinatown, Huy Fong Chili Garlic sauce is one of my favorite ingredients. It's incredibly versatile and IMO absolutely essential to any respectable chef's kitchen. I also call these "Firecracker Sloppy Joe's" depending on how hot I'm making them. This recipe is FANTASTIC for a party. Double or triple it depending on your guest list. You can make it hours ahead of time and let it simmer all day in the crock pot. Throw some buns out and let the guests spoon on the "joes". Rave reviews. Guaranteed.

Steps:
- For the sauce: In a bowl, whisk together the tomato sauce, soy sauce, brown sugar, tomato paste, vinegar, garlic, ginger and hot sauce until blended. Reserve 1/2 cup for the Round 2 Recipe Stuffed Cabbage Rolls, or another use. Set the rest of the sauce aside.
- For the sloppy joes: In a large skillet over medium heat, add the oil. When it is hot, add the onions and peppers and cook until they are soft, about 5 minutes. Push the vegetables to one side of the pan and add the ground pork. Break up any lumps and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Cook until the pork is lightly browned, about 5 minutes. If there is a lot of fat in the pan, spoon some of it out and discard.
- Add the sauce to the pan, bring to a simmer and cook until the pork mixture has thickened but is still a bit loose, about 15 minutes. Reserve 1 cup of the mixture for the Round 2 Recipe Stuffed Cabbage Rolls, or another use.
- To serve, remove 2 leaves from the cabbage, roll them up like a cigar and slice into very thin strips. Reserve the remaining cabbage for the Round 2 Recipe Stuffed Cabbage Rolls, or another use. Divide the sloppy joe mixture onto the hamburger buns. Garnish with the sliced cabbage. Top with the bun tops and serve immediately.
THE BEST SLOPPY JOES
This is weeknight comfort food at its finest. We created a homemade sauce that is tangy and flavorful but also quick and easy. We used both ketchup and canned tomato sauce for lots of tomato-y zip and just a touch of brown sugar for a bit of sweetness and slight caramel finish. Green bell pepper is a key addition; it really enhances the other ingredients, elevating the flavor profile into the realm of a true sloppy joe.
