Try a healthy accompaniment to tandoori dishes or barbecued meats. Koshimbir is an Indian slaw or crunchy cabbage salad where the chilli is optional

1 tbsp sunflower oil
1 tsp black mustard seed
1 tsp cumin seeds
½ white cabbage , finely shredded or coarsely grated
1 red onion , finely sliced
1 green chilli , chopped (optional)
½ lemon , juiced

Steps:

  • Heat the oil in a frying pan and warm the mustard and cumin seeds until they sizzle and crackle, then remove from the heat. Combine everything together in a mixing bowl with a large pinch of salt and serve. (Can be made a day ahead and kept in the fridge.)

A bit different... tastes great. Cabbage, Romano cheese and a cream sauce are a perfect combination!

Number Of Ingredients 7

1 cup milk
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons butter
¼ teaspoon salt
1 dash ground black pepper
1 medium head cabbage, shredded
1 cup grated Romano cheese

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • In a medium saucepan over medium heat, blend milk, flour, butter, salt and pepper. Stir constantly until a thick white sauce has formed.
  • In a separate medium saucepan over boiling water, steam cabbage until tender but firm.
  • In a small baking dish, alternate layers of sauce, cabbage and Romano cheese.
  • Bake approximately 30 minutes, until sauce and cheese are bubbly.
