Whip up this buttery, easy biscuit recipe to serve with breakfast or dinner. The dough is very simple to work with, so there's no need to roll with a rolling pin; just pat to the right thickness. — Taste of Home Test Kitchen

Number Of Ingredients 5

2 cups all-purpose flour
3 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup cold butter, cubed
2/3 cup 2% milk

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 450°. In a large bowl, whisk flour, baking powder and salt. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add milk; stir just until moistened., Turn onto a lightly floured surface; knead gently 8-10 times. Pat dough to 1/2-in. thickness. Cut with a 2-1/2-in. biscuit cutter., Place 1 in. apart on an ungreased baking sheet. Bake until golden brown, 10-15 minutes. Serve warm.

Yield Makes 24 biscuits

Number Of Ingredients 7

3 green cardamom pods
40g icing sugar
100g unsalted butter, at room temperature
70g self-raising white flour
25g gram flour
25g semolina
24 skin-on almonds or chopped pistachios

Steps:

  • Split the cardamom pods and remove the seeds. Pound the seeds to a powder in a pestle and mortar with 1 tsp of the sugar.
  • Beat the butter until soft, then gradually add the remaining icing sugar and the ground cardamom. Continue beating until light and creamy, about 10 mins.
  • Sieve the flour and gram flour into a bowl and whisk in the semolina and a pinch of salt. Stir into the butter and sugar in two increments. Gently bring everything together into a soft dough.
  • Roll the dough into small, marble-sized balls with your hands and arrange, spaced out, on baking trays lined with baking parchment.
  • Slightly flatten the top of each ball and press a whole almond or some chopped pistachios in the middle of each one. Chill for 20 mins.
  • Heat the oven to 160C/140C fan/gas 3. Bake the biscuits for about 20 mins or until golden. Leave to cool before storing in an airtight tin.

This is a basic biscuit recipe with baking powder used as the leavening. They're easy to make and go with almost any meal.

2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
½ cup shortening
¾ cup milk

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 450 degrees F (230 degrees C).
  • In a large mixing bowl sift together flour, baking powder and salt. Cut in shortening with fork or pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Pour milk into flour mixture while stirring with a fork. Mix in milk until dough is soft, moist and pulls away from the side of the bowl.
  • Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and toss with flour until no longer sticky. Roll dough out into a 1/2 inch thick sheet and cut with a floured biscuit or cookie cutter. Press together unused dough and repeat rolling and cutting procedure.
  • Place biscuits on ungreased baking sheets and bake in preheated oven until golden brown, about 10 minutes.

1 (1/4 ounce) packet yeast
1 1/4 cups water, warm (110F)
1 teaspoon sugar
2 cups semolina
12 ounces butter
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 tablespoon mahleb (powdered)
1 tablespoon anise
1 tablespoon fennel seed
1/2 tablespoon black caraway seed (kalonji)

Steps:

  • Mix yeast, warm water, and sugar; set the mixture aside.
  • Put the remaining ingredients into a large bowl and mix.
  • Add the yeast mixture and mix well.
  • Cover the bowl with a cloth and keep in a warm place for 1 hour.
  • Preheat the over to 350°F
  • Roll the dough into balls 1¼ inches in diameter.
  • Start with 15 pieces and leave the rest of the dough covered to prevent drying.
  • Roll the ball into a finger shape four inches long.
  • Bring the ends together so they overlap and pinch them together so you end up with a ring shape.
  • Places them 1/2 inch apart on a cookie sheet.
  • Bake for 40 minutes until they are golden brown.
  • When the cookies are done turn off the oven and leave the cookies in it for an hour to become really crispy.
