How to Make Homemade Cough Syrup With Whiskey image

How to make a whiskey cough syrup with honey and lemon. Use it by itself or use to make a hot toddy.

1/2 cup brown whiskey
1/4 cup raw honey (local if possible)
1 lemon, sliced
1/2 cup brown whiskey
1/4 cup raw honey, local is best
1 lemon sliced
10-12 peppermint balls
1 1/2 ounce brown whiskey
1 tablespoon raw honey, local is best
1/2 ounce lemon juice
1 cup hot water or tea
Lemon wedge, cinnamon stick, or star anise (optional)

Steps:

  • Place lemon slices in the jar.
  • Pour whiskey over the lemon slices.
  • Spoon the raw honey on top.
  • Seal the jar and shake for a minute.
  • Let rest overnight, shake every few hours.
  • Place 3-4 peppermint balls in the jar.
  • Add lemon slices on top of the peppermint balls.
  • Add about half of the honey.
  • Repeat with another layer.
  • Add whiskey to fill the jar.
  • Put the lid on the jar and shake gently.
  • Let the homemade cough syrup with whiskey and peppermint sit overnight, shaking every few hours.
  • Combine whiskey, honey, and lemon juice in a mug.
  • Pour in hot water. Stir well.
  • Add a lemon wedge, cinnamon stick, or star anise if desired.
  • Drink while hot.

This homemade cough syrup uses bourbon (or whiskey), raw honey, and apple cider vinegar for an easy tonic. Use it to soothe a sore throat, calm a cough, or simply because it's delicious!

2 ounces raw honey (4 TB)
2 ounces bourbon or whiskey
2 ounces apple cider vinegar (with the mother)

Steps:

  • Add all ingredients to a jar. Close the jar, and shake until the honey is incorporated.
  • Use as desired. Recommended serving size ½ oz (1 TB) per person.Optionally, dilute a spoonful of the syrup by pouring into a small mug of warm water. Sip on the warm tonic.Store the lidded jar in the fridge, and use within 6 months.

2 ounces bourbon whiskey
1/2 lemon, juiced (about 2 ounces)
2-4 ounces water (optional)
1 tablespoon honey

Steps:

  • Mix the bourbon, lemon juice, and water (if using) in a tumbler or mug and heat in the microwave for about 45 seconds. (You can also do this on the stovetop in a little saucepan.) Take out and add the honey. Whisk to combine, then microwave for another 45 seconds. If you're sick, it's best not to drink this too hot; a good warm temperature is better. Take it to bed and nurse it slowly with a book in the other hand. Sleep well!

1 teaspoon unsalted butter

  • In a small saucepan, bring sugar and 1/2 cup water to a boil. Cook 5 minutes. Add butter, vanilla, and bourbon. Cook until syrupy, about 5 minutes.
