HOMEMADE DOG LIVER BITES

Homemade Dog Liver Bites image

This homemade dog food is so easy to make with only 4 to 5 ingredients. A blender, liquidizer, or food processor is a great bonus and saves too much mess (but can be made without one, you just have to chop the liver well). They freeze very well. I have been making these yummy bites for my dogs for over 20 years and have not yet had a complaint! I make double or triple the mix so I always have some spare for doggy visitors. Great to chop/crumble up and put on regular dog food if pooch has lost his appetite. Also can conceal pills very well too.

SOFT LIVER DOG TREATS

Soft Liver Dog Treats image

Between the two of them, my husband and dog are allergic to many of the common ingredients in dog treats. There are also a lot of ingredients in commercial treats that I avoid on principle. I came up with this recipe to satisfy a need for soft and tasty training treats that meet our needs and our dog's tastes. Adjust the seasonings or substitute another fruit or vegetable for your dog's own needs.

Categories     < 30 Mins

Time 30m

Yield 8 cups, 24 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 7

20 ounces chicken livers
2 1/2 cups quick-cooking oats
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon dried parsley
1 teaspoon dried rosemary
3/4 cup blueberries (frozen is fine)
1 tablespoon olive oil

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350°F.
  • Combine all ingredients in a blender or food processor.
  • Puree until smooth and well mixed (it may be necessary to add more water or oats, depending on how wet the liver is; I do not drain mine).
  • Line two 13x9" pans with nonstick foil or parchment paper.
  • Divide the puree between the two pans and spread evenly.
  • Bake at 350 for 25 minutes, until tops are no longer moist and cakes can be lifted from the pans (the bottoms will be golden brown).
  • Allow to cool slightly, then cut with a knife or pizza cutter into small pieces. For training treats for a small to medium sized dog, aim for pea-sized pieces.
  • Freeze treats that you will not use in the next few days.

  • For this recipe I use my PowerXL Air Fryer Oven and the three dehydrating trays that come with it.
  • Using unbleached parchment paper, cut to size so that it fits the drying rack trays and set aside.
  • Remove sliced liver from packaging. Rinse under cool water and shake off excess water.Place meat on cutting board and using a sharp knife, carefully cut liver into pieces and place on unbleached parchment paper covered drying trays. Space pieces apart so they are not touching each other.Any extra liver that won’t fit on all the trays place in a baggie and put back into the refrigerator until ready to make the next batch. Use preferably within 24 hours.
  • Flash BakeThis next step is very important! Temperature is important when making jerky, not only for dogs but for human consumption too.To make dehydrated meats safe for your dog or dogs it is very important to “flash bake” the meat first. The flash bake will rid the meats of any Salmonella and E. coli. Therefore, don’t skip this step because we don’t want any sick doggies. To flash bake, place trays of meat in the Air Fryer Oven and bake liver at 250 degrees Fahrenheit for 15 minutes.
