Xni-Pec (Dog's Nose) - Habanero Salsa Recipe image

Xni-Pec is a Yucatan salsa made with fresh habanero peppers, tomato, onion, sour orange juice and more. It packs some heat, and as the name implies, might make you sweat like a dog's nose.

Number Of Ingredients 6

3 habanero peppers (chopped (or more, as desired))
1 medium tomato (chopped)
1 small white onion (chopped)
3 tablespoons fresh sour orange juice
¼ cup chopped cilantro
Salt to taste

Steps:

  • Combine all ingredients in a mixing bowl. Mix well. Taste and adjust for salt.
  • Cover and refrigerate overnight for the flavors to mingle and develop. Serve!

I made this a few years ago for a hockey party. The men loved it the women complained about the heat--you decide. Caution: Extremely hot.

4 habanero peppers, seeds and stems removed and diced
4 limes, juice of
1 onion, diced
1 tomatoes, diced

Steps:

  • Soak the diced onion in the lime juice for at least 30 minutes.
  • Add all the other ingredients and mix.
  • Salt to taste.
  • Serve with grilled fish or grilled chicken.

3 plum tomatoes, finely diced
1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
1/4 cup white onion, minced
1/4 cup sour orange juice or 1/4 cup lime juice

Steps:

  • Combine all the ingredients.
  • Let sit for 30 minutes at room temperature and serve!

  • Slice the habanero peppers in half and carefully remove the seeds. Be very careful when handling the peppers as they can be very spicy and could leave a burning sensation in your hands for a long time. Wear a gloves when handling the pepper.
  • Place them under the broiler for 2 to 3 minutes until the skin begins to char. Flip it to the other side and place it under the broiler for a minute more.
  • Remove it from the oven and let it cool. Now finely chop the peppers and place them in a large mixing bowl.
