2 (750 milliliter) bottles red wine
1 (3 inch) cinnamon stick
1 whole nutmeg
1 whole star anise pods
1 ½ cups sour cherries - drained, juice reserved
1 orange, thinly sliced
3 fluid ounces kirschwasser

Steps:

  • Combine the sugar cubes, wine, cinnamon stick, nutmeg, and star anise in a saucepan. Heat over medium heat until the mixture begins to foam.n
  • Remove from heat and transfer to a slow cooker to keep warm. Stir in the sour cherries and their juice; add the kirschwasser and the orange slices.n

This very easy recipe comes from Winemaker magazine. I liked it because I had all of the ingredients on hand, it is really fast, and because it warmed me up and helped alleviate the symptoms of the cold I had at the time. According to the recipe source, the mixture can be kept warm in a crockpot, or on a coffee warmer (covered) for several hours, and can be successfully reheated the next day. (Mine never lasted long enough for me to testify to the above statement.)

1/2 cup water
1/2 cup sugar
2 whole cloves
2 cinnamon sticks
1 orange
1 (750 ml) bottle red table wine (Pinot Noir, Merlot, Shiraz, etc.)

Steps:

  • Mix water, sugar, cinnamon, cloves, wine, and the juice of the orange together in a heavy pot.
  • Bring up the heat, but do not boil.
  • Add the orange peel and simmer 15 minutes.
  • Serve immediately in preheated mugs.
