"My family would never eat turnips until I served them this way," says Debbie Henry from Phelpston, Ontario. This downsized version goes well with turkey, ham or roast beef. TIP: A pound of turnips yields about 2 cups chopped.

Number Of Ingredients 12

3 cups cubed peeled turnips
1 tablespoon butter
1 egg
4-1/2 teaspoons all-purpose flour
1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1-1/2 teaspoons brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
Dash pepper
Dash ground nutmeg
TOPPING:
2 tablespoons dry bread crumbs
2 teaspoons butter, melted

Steps:

  • Place turnips in a large saucepan and cover with water. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and cook for 10-15 minutes or until tender. Drain; mash with butter. Cool slightly. , Preheat oven to 375°. Beat in egg. Combine the flour, baking powder, brown sugar, salt, pepper and nutmeg; stir into turnip mixture. , Spoon into a 3-cup baking dish coated with cooking spray. Toss bread crumbs and butter; sprinkle over casserole. Bake, uncovered, until heated through and a thermometer reads 160°, 30-35 minutes.

Who knew that turnips could be delicious? Turnip Puff is the only turnip recipe you will ever need. Even turnip haters love it!

Number Of Ingredients 11

6 cups cubed turnips, or rutabaga
2 Tbsp butter
2 eggs, beaten
3 Tbsp flour
1 Tbsp brown sugar
1 tsp baking powder
3/4 tsp salt
1/8 tsp ground black pepper
pinch of nutmeg
1/2 cup fine bread crumbs
2 Tbsp melted butter

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Butter a medium size casserole dish.
  • Boil turnip in a medium saucepan until tender.
  • Drain and mash.
  • Add butter and egg and mix well.
  • Combine flour, brown sugar, baking powder, salt, pepper and nutmeg in a small bowl.
  • Mix into the turnip mixture.
  • Pour turnip mixture into buttered casserole dish.
  • Combine bread crumbs and melted butter. Spread evenly over turnip mixture.
  • Bake for 25 minutes or until light brown on top.

Number Of Ingredients 10

6 cups cubed turnips
2 tablespoons butter
2 eggs, beaten
3 tablespoons flour
1 tablespoon brown sugar, packed
1 teaspoon baking powder
salt and pepper
1 pinch nutmeg
1/2 cup fine breadcrumbs
2 tablespoons butter, melted

Steps:

  • Cook turnip until tender, drain and mash (by hand).
  • Add butter and eggs and beat well.
  • (This can be done the a day ahead).
  • Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, seasoning and nutmeg.
  • Stir into turnip mixture.
  • Pour into a buttered casserole dish.
  • Mix breadcrumbs and butter and sprinkle on top.
  • Bake at 375 for 25 minutes or until light brown on top.

This recipe has been in our family for years. We like turnips with turkey, so my mother used to serve this side dish with our turkey dinner at Christmas. Then I served this dish, and now my daughter, who has taken over preparing Christmas dinner, is carrying on the tradition.

Transfer to a greased 8-in. square baking dish. , Melt remaining butter; toss with bread crumbs. Sprinkle over top. Bake, uncovered, 25-30 minutes or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean. Serve immediately.

1/2 cup butter, melted
