2 cups flour
5.5 cups sugar
5.5 teaspoons baking powder
0.75 teaspoons baking soda
0.5 teaspoons salt
1 cups bananas
0.5 cups buttermilk
0.5 cups shortening
2 units eggs
1 teaspoons vanilla
2 cups sweetened whipped cream
1 cups strawberries
20.25 ounces pineapple
11 jars ice
0.5 cups peanuts

Steps:

  • For cake, grease and flour two 9x1-1/2-inch round baking pans; set aside. In a large mixing bowl combine flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add banana, buttermilk or sour milk, shortening, eggs, and vanilla. Beat with an electric mixer on low speed until combined. Beat on medium speed for 3 minutes. Pour into prepared pans.
  • 2. Bake in a 350 degree F. oven for 30 minutes or until a wooden toothpick inserted near center comes out clean. Cool on wire racks 10 minutes. Remove from pans and cool completely on racks.
  • 3. For fillings, divide whipped cream or dessert topping in half. Fold berries into half of the whipped cream. Fold drained pineapple into the other half of the whipped cream. In a small saucepan heat and stir fudge ice-cream topping over low heat just until warm (not hot).
  • 4. To assemble, using a serrated knife, split each cake layer in half horizontally. Place bottom of one split layer on a serving plate. Top with the strawberry-cream mixture, spreading to edge of the cake layer. Place another split cake layer atop. Spread with half of the warm fudge topping, letting it drizzle down the sides. Sprinkle with half of the nuts.
  • 5. Top with another split cake layer. Spread with the pineapple-cream mixture. Top with remaining split cake layer. Spread remaining warm fudge topping atop cake, letting some of it drip down the sides of the cake. Sprinkle top of the cake with the remaining chopped nuts. Serve immediately or cover loosely with plastic wrap, placing a few toothpicks in top of the cake so the wrap doesn't stick to the topping, and chill for up to 2 hours. Before serving, remove, and discard toothpicks, if used, and garnish with banana slices, if desired.

T.L.B.S. (TASTES LIKE BANANA SPLIT)

T.l.b.s. (Tastes Like Banana Split) image

This is a slightly tweaked version of a great old traditional dessert, originally developed by Mr. Food (Art Ginsberg). I really love Mr. Food recipes for their simplicity and they always turn out nicely. This one is simple to make, delicious, fast, and fairly cheap. It's usually my covered dish when desserts are requested for school events or reunions and I always bring home an empty pan because the dish has a LOT of eye appeal as well. It needs to refrigerate for an hour or so prior to serving and that time is reflected in the "cooking time," albeit there is no cooking to it. Everybody bugs me for this great old traditional recipe -- and now YOU have it too!*.*

Categories     Dessert

Time 1h10m

Yield 12 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 8

2 cups graham cracker crumbs
6 tablespoons butter, melted
2 (3 1/2 ounce) packages vanilla flavor instant pudding and pie filling mix
3 bananas, sliced
20 ounces crushed pineapple in syrup, drained
12 ounces frozen whipped topping, thawed
1/3 cup nuts, crushed topping nuts (garnish)
16 maraschino cherries (garnish)

Steps:

  • In a medium bowl, mix the graham cracker crumbs and the melted butter. Pat this mixture into a 9" x 13" casserole dish and refrigerate for a few minutes.
  • In a large mixing bowl, prepare the pudding according to package directions.
  • Spread the pudding in the graham cracker crust and cover with the banana slices. Then, layer in the pineapple and whipped topping. Garnish with the nuts and the cherries and cover lightly with cling wrap and keep refrigerated until serving time.
  • NOTE: This dish is best if it is refrigerated overnight prior to serving. If you do this, garnish just before serving. Also, be sure to use INSTANT pudding (cold) and, if two blends are listed on the box, choose the thicker one that uses less milk.
