"TASTEE" SANDWICH

If you have grown up, lived, or traveled to the Midwest, this recipe is from a popular restaurant that was in Lincoln, NE. I've been told it's an acquired taste, but having grown up on them, I love them! It's a loose meat sandwich. Use a slotted spoon to portion out the meat. Serve on buns with mustard and sliced dill pickles.

Time 1h

Yield 26

Number Of Ingredients 10

4 ounces ketchup, or more to taste
5 teaspoons salt
1 tablespoon prepared mustard
1 tablespoon creamed horseradish
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
5 pounds 85% lean ground beef
1 cup warm water
1 cup minced onion
1 teaspoon monosodium glutamate (such as Ac'cent®)

Steps:

  • Combine ketchup, salt, mustard, horseradish, Worcestershire sauce, and ground black pepper in a 1-cup measuring cup. Add more ketchup if combined ingredients don't equal 1 cup. Stir until well mixed. Place ground beef in a stock pot; pour ketchup mixture over the ground beef.
  • Fill the same measuring cup with warm water. Stir to loosen any fine seasoning remaining; pour into stock pot. Stir onion into ground beef mixture; add monosodium glutamate. Mix until ingredients are well combined.
  • Cook and stir the ground beef mixture over low heat until the ground beef is finely crumbled, about 15 minutes. Bring to a boil; cook until flavors blend, about 25 minutes.

TASTY LOOSE MEAT SANDWICHES

Tasty Loose Meat Sandwiches image

I discovered the concept of the loose meat sandwich from watching an episode of the Roseanne show about 18 years ago. Loose meat sandwiches are a tasty change once in a while. The seasoned ground beef is easy to make and several seasonings are added to give the meat a unique but mild taste. Loose meat tastes best when served on a fresh kaiser or poppy seed roll. This is one of my favorite recipes due to the fact it is so inexpensive, easy to prepare and it tastes great.

Time 19m

Yield 3-5 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 11

2 lbs 80% lean ground beef
1 green pepper
1 Spanish onion
2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons tomato paste
1/4 cup water
2 tablespoons garlic powder
1 teaspoon sea salt
1 teaspoon cracked black pepper
1/4 cup merlot
1/4 cup brown gravy mix

Steps:

  • In large skillet add 2 tablespoons butter, when butter begins to melt add diced onion and green pepper. Simmer onion and peppers in skillet for about 6 minutes. Make sure you dice the green pepper and Spanish onion prior to adding to the ground beef.
  • Next, add merlot wine, allow wine to simmer for about a minute. Before adding ground beef take a potato masher and work through the meat in order to break the meat into tiny pieces. Add ground beef and simmer for about 8 minutes before turning meat over to brown both sides.
  • After both sides are brown, add gravy packet along with 1/2 cup of cold water, stir gravy, onion and peppers throughly through the ground beef.
  • Next, you need to add salt, garlic powder, sea salt and cracked pepper, make sure all ingredients are mixed evenly through ground beef. Once the remainder of ingredients are added, simmer over medium heat for an additional 8-12 minutes.
  • Serve hot on a fresh kaiser or poppy seed roll. Homemade kaiser rolls from the bakery are the best. Loose meat sandwiches can be served with fries, potato chips or simply by itself.

FAMOUS TASTEE SANDWISH

Famous Tastee Sandwish image

From the Tastee Inn & Out restaurant in Lincoln, NE. This makes quite a few sandwiches. They published a booklet of their recipes in 1976, and this is the exact published recipe.

Categories     Meat

Time 50m

Yield 5 pounds, 25 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 9

4 ounces Heinz ketchup
3 teaspoons prepared mustard (heaping)
3 teaspoons creamed horseradish (heaping)
3 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
5 teaspoons salt (heaping)
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
5 lbs ground beef (85/15 is recommended)
1 cup ground onion
1 teaspoon Accent seasoning (MSG)

Steps:

  • Take an 8 ounce cup or jar and add the ketchup, mustard, horseradish, Worchestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. This should fill the cup. If not, add more ketchup. Stir thoroughly untill all ingredients are completely mixed. You now have the basic spices.
  • Place the beef in a flat bottom aluminum kettle. Put the seasoning you just made into the kettle on top of the beef.
  • Fill the same cup or jar with warm water, rinsing it around to get all the fine seasoning out and pour it into the kettle.
  • Next, fill the jar with finely ground yellow onions and empty into the kettle.
  • Add the heaping teaspoon of Accent.
  • Take a wooden spoon to stir and mix all the ingredients in the kettle thoroughly.
  • Put the kettle on your stove over a low flame and stir constantly with the wooden spoon for about 15 minutes or until the meat is broken apart finely. Increase the heat to medium and let the mixture come to a boil. Let boil for 25 minutes. Stir with the wooden spoon every few minutes to assure that it doesn't stick to the bottom of the kettle and to avoid lumps.
  • Usee a regular metal straining spoon to portion out the meat. Serve on buns.

TASTEE LOOSE MEAT SANDWICHES

Tastee Loose Meat Sandwiches image

We used to eat at Tastee Inn & Out in Lincoln, NE or B & G's in Omaha, NE. My mother got this recipe from the newspaper years ago. One of our favorites to make for game day or any day! Enjoy! These are also the same sandwiches that Roseanne used to make on her show! YUM!

Provided by Christine Weidner

Categories     Sandwiches

Number Of Ingredients 8

5 lb ground beef (85% lean)
4 oz ketchup
3 tsp mustard
3 tsp horseradish cream style
3 tsp worcestershire sauce
5 tsp salt (this is original recipe i use less)
1 c onion finely chopped
1/4 tsp black pepper

Steps:

  • 1. Place ground beef in big pot like a dutch oven. Combine ketchup, mustard, horseradish, Worcestershire & salt in a 1 cup glass measuring cup. Stir it into beef. Fill the same cup with warm water and add to beef. Use same cup to measure ground onion; add to beef. Stir in black pepper. Cook beef on low heat stirring constantly or until meat is in fine pieces. Increase heat slowly until mixture boils. Boil 25 minutes, stirring every few minutes to avoid sticking. Use slotted spoon and dip meat onto hamburger buns.
