We LOVE root beer and this is a great way to incorporate it into my cooking! (Prep and cook times are approximate and for sauce only)

1 cup root beer
1 cup ketchup
2/3 cup molasses
1/3 cup apple cider vinegar
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 teaspoon chili powder
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon salt
2 lbs sirloin steaks or 2 lbs beef, of choice

Steps:

  • Place all ingredients except steak in large bowl; stir until blended.
  • Add steak; cover, and marinate in refrigerator at least 2 hours.
  • Remove steak from marinade.
  • Place remaining marinade in medium saucepan and boil from 10 to 50 minutes (or until you have it at the thickness you want), stirring occasionally.
  • Preheat grill.
  • Grill steak 5 to 10 minutes per side or to desired doneness.
  • Serve with boiled sauce.

My mother-in-law created this recipe, and we just can't get enough of her delectable sauce! I always keep a little out of the basting dish prior to using it on the grill so we have some to serve at the table. It tastes terrific on any grilled meat. -Mary Kaye Rackowitz, Marysville, Washington

1 cup ketchup
2 tablespoons lemon juice
2 tablespoons cider vinegar
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
2 teaspoons prepared mustard
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 to 1 teaspoon hot pepper sauce
1 bay leaf
1 garlic clove, minced
1/2 cup water
2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce

Steps:

  • Combine all of the ingredients in a small saucepan; bring to a boil, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 30 minutes., Discard bay leaf. Use as a basting sauce when grilling chicken, pork or beef.

  • To make the orange puree, wash the orange well, and then put it in a pot and cover it with water. Bring to a boil and boil for 10 minutes. Remove the orange and cut in quarters, Remove any seeds, and then put the rest, peel and all, into the bowl of a food processor fitted with the metal blade. Pulse and then puree until the orange is smooth. One large orange will make enough puree for approximately 6 bottles of sauce. Set aside 2 heaping tablespoons of the puree for this recipe.
  • Put everything else into am enameled or non-reactive pot, along with the 2 tablespoons of orange puree, and bring to a simmer. Simmer the sauce, stirring often, for about 5-7 minutes. Taste the sauce to determine if and how you want to adjust the seasonings. This sauce has more body and is less tart than A1. You can add more water to thin, and more vinegar for more tang, if you like.
