THE 10 BEST SUBSTITUTES FOR KETCHUP IN RECIPES | THERECIPE

From therecipe.com
Author Courtney Yost
  • Cocktail Sauce. Although a bit unconventional, this can be a sufficient replacement if you don’t mind the spice that it brings. After all, many cocktail sauces have ketchup in them.
  • Sun-Dried Tomatoes. One creative replacement is sun-dried tomatoes. If you happen to have a food processor on hand, blending the sun-dried tomatoes with small amounts of water and olive oil will create a homemade puree.
  • Salsa. For certain recipes, salsa can certainly be used as a replacement. For recipes where you need a tomato-based dip or condiment, it can certainly work depending on the food you're serving it with.
  • White Wine Vinegar. Much like apple cider vinegar, white wine vinegar can be used in a pinch. Of course, this option works best if you are looking to add a bit of tangy flavor to the dish.
  • BBQ Sauce. If you are looking to use ketchup as a dip or condiment, replacing it with BBQ sauce is a great idea. BBQ sauce tastes great with burgers, fries, fried chicken, and even grilled cheese.
  • Sriracha. If you don’t mind a bit of spice, you can throw in some sriracha instead of ketchup into your dish. Adding some brown sugar might give it a sweet undertone, which will make it have a nice balance of sweet and spicy.
  • Tomato Sauce. Tomato sauce is great because it can be used at a 1:1 ratio in replacement of ketchup. One thing you might need to do is change the seasonings so that the flavor can blend in better with the recipe you are making.
  • Tomato Jam. Have you ever had tomato jam? This is an excellent choice to use! Tomato jam is typically made with several common ingredients that ketchup has.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar. Surprisingly, apple cider vinegar can work very well in replacement for ketchup. Vinegar is usually incorporated into ketchup; that is how the ketchup turns out with a tangy undertone.
  • Tomato Paste. This can certainly work in a pinch when you don’t have ketchup on hand. To use tomato paste as a substitute, think about seasoning it or adding a splash of vinegar to it before incorporating it into your dish.
