A refreshing change from lemonade. If you don't care for pulp in your drink, feel free to strain the juice before you add it to the water.

2 cups water
1 ½ cups white sugar
6 cups water
1 ½ cups freshly squeezed orange juice
⅓ cup freshly squeezed lemon juice

Steps:

  • Bring 2 cups water and sugar to a boil in a small saucepan; cook at a boil for 3 minutes, stirring to dissolve sugar, and creating a simple syrup.
  • Combine simple syrup, 6 cups water, orange juice, and lemon juice in a large pitcher; refrigerate until cold.

SPICED ORANGEADE

You can serve this orangeade on its own as a nonalcoholic beverage, or use it in the orange shandy recipe.

2 cups sugar
1/2 cup coriander seeds, toasted and coarsely ground
Zest of 2 oranges, removed in strips with a vegetable peeler
8 cups fresh orange juice (from about 20 oranges)
1/2 cup fresh lemon juice (from 3 or 4 lemons)
Ice

Steps:

  • Bring sugar and 2 cups water to a boil in a small pot. Reduce heat; simmer, stirring, until sugar dissolves. Remove from heat; stir in coriander and orange zest. Cover, and let steep 2 hours. Simple syrup can be refrigerated up to 2 weeks. Strain before using.
  • Combine syrup and juices in a 3-quart pitcher, and refrigerate until cold, at least 2 hours and up to 2 days. Serve over ice.

SAFFRON ORANGEADE

Though generally a savory spice, here saffron effortlessly blends with orange juice in an earthy, spice-infused cooler.

3/4 cup water
3/4 cup sugar
1/4 teaspoon saffron threads
6 cups fresh orange juice, strained (from about 14 oranges)

Steps:

  • Bring water and sugar to a boil in a small saucepan, stirring until sugar dissolves. Remove from heat, and add saffron. Cover, and let cool.
  • Combine orange juice and saffron syrup in a pitcher. Divide orangeade among ice-filled glasses.

½ cup soy sauce
¼ cup orange juice
2 tablespoons sugar
1 clove garlic, minced
½ teaspoon ground ginger
2 tablespoons raisins
4 (8 ounce) skinless, boneless chicken breast halves

Steps:

  • To Marinate: Combine soy sauce, orange juice, sugar, garlic, ginger and raisins in a nonporous glass dish or bowl. Mix well, then add chicken and turn to coat. Cover dish or bowl and refrigerate to marinate for 2 to 3 hours, turning once or twice.
  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).
  • Place chicken in a 9x13 inch baking dish and pour marinade evenly over all.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes, basting often.

3 cups apple cider
2 oranges, thinly sliced
1 lime, thinly sliced
4 (3 inch) cinnamon sticks
8 whole cloves
1 star anise
2 tablespoons honey

Steps:

  • Combine orange juice, apple cider, orange slices, lime slices, cinnamon sticks, cloves, and star anise in a large saucepan.
  • Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, about 5 minutes. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 10 minutes.
  • Remove cinnamon sticks, cloves, and star anise. Stir in honey and keep warm.
  • Pour warm cider into cups and garnish with a cinnamon stick for stirring and several orange and lime slices.
