Slow Cooker Chopped Steak with Onion Mushroom Gravy image

An excellent weekday ground beef dinner reminiscent of salisbury steak, but much easier.

1 lb very lean ground beef
2 low-sodium beef stock cubes (crushed*)
2 tbsp instant minced onion
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/4 cup plain bread crumbs
1/4 cup milk
10.75 oz can low sodium cream of mushroom soup*
10.75 oz can condensed French onion soup
1 pkg brown gravy mix
1 cup sliced mushrooms
2 tbsp water
1 tbsp oil
1/4 cup flour

Steps:

  • *Regular soup and stock cubes may be used if you wish.
  • Add the bread crumbs, instant onions, garlic powder, crushed stock cubes and milk in a medium bowl. Mix and let stand about 5 minutes.
  • Mix ground beef into the bread crumb mixture, mixing well. Form into 4 thin burgers.
  • Heat a large skillet over high heat and add oil.
  • Dust burgers with the flour then add to hot skillet. Brown for about 1 minute each side-you aren't cooking the meat, just quickly browning.
  • Place browned burgers in the bottom of a slow cooker (I used a 5 quart), stacking if necessary.
  • Mix the soups, mushrooms, gravy mix and water in a small bowl. Pour over burgers.
  • Cover and cook on LOW 6-8 hours.

6 chuck blade steaks
creole seasoning or other seasoning mix, salt and pepper will do
3 tablespoons flour
3 tablespoons cold water
1 teaspoon kitchen bouquet or other gravy browning sauce
salt, to taste
freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Steps:

  • Place sliced onions in the crockpot. Sprinkle the steaks with seasoning mixture; place in crockpot on the onions. Blend flour and cold water; stir with a fork or small whisk until smooth. Add gravy browning sauce; spoon over steak. Cover and cook on LOW for 7 to 9 hours.

Creole seasoning or other seasoning mixes (salt and pepper will do)
3 tablespoons flour
3 tablespoons cold water

Salt and pepper to taste

Steps:

  • Gather the ingredients.
  • Place sliced onion in the crock pot. Sprinkle the steaks with seasoning mixture, or salt and pepper and place in the crock pot on top of the onions.

1 cup flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
6 beef cube steaks
3 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 large onion, sliced into rings
3 cups water
1 (3/4 ounce) packet brown gravy mix
1 (10 ounce) can cream of mushroom soup
1 (1 ounce) packet onion soup mix

Steps:

  • Heat oil in a skillet over med/high heat.
  • Put flour, salt and pepper in a zip lock bag and mix well. Add the cube steaks one at a time, close bag, and shake to coat in flour.
  • Add steaks to hot oil and brown on each side. Transfer steaks to the slow cooker.
  • Add sliced onion rings and 2 cups of water to the crockpot as well.
  • Cook on low setting for 8 hours.
  • Mix together gravy mix, onion soup mix and the cream of mushroom soup with the last 1 cup of water. Add this to the slow cooker and mix gently so you do not tear up the steaks.
  • Cook the cube steaks and gravy for 3 minutes longer. Serve over mashed potatoes or noodles.

Steps:

  • Cut steak into six serving-size pieces; place in a 3-quart slow cooker.
  • Add mushrooms and onions to crockpot.
  • Combine soup mix, soup and water; pour over beef. I often used two packets of the soup mix.
