My sweet and chunky applesauce is a perfect snack or side dish with your favorite entree. Because it's prepared in the slow cooker, you can fix it and forget it before you and the family head out for some fun. -Susanne Wasson, Montgomery, New York

Number Of Ingredients 7

6 pounds apples (about 18 medium), peeled and sliced
1 cup sugar
1 cup water
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 cup butter, cubed
2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Steps:

  • In a 5-qt. slow cooker, combine the apples, sugar, water, salt and cinnamon. Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours or until tender. , Turn off heat; stir in butter and vanilla. Mash if desired. Serve warm or cold.

I make several batches of this simple and delicious homemade apple butter recipe to freeze in jars. Depending on the sweetness of the apples used, you can adjust the sugar to taste. -Betty Ruenholl, Syracuse, Nebraska

Number Of Ingredients 5

5-1/2 pounds apples, peeled, cored and finely chopped
4 cups sugar
2 to 3 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1/4 teaspoon salt

Steps:

  • Place apples in a 3-qt. slow cooker. Combine sugar, cinnamon, cloves and salt; pour over apples and mix well. Cover and cook on high for 1 hour. , Reduce heat to low; cover and cook for 9-11 hours or until thickened and dark brown, stirring occasionally (stir more frequently as it thickens to prevent sticking). , Uncover and cook on low 1 hour longer. If desired, stir with a wire whisk until smooth. Spoon into freezer containers, leaving 1/2-in. headspace. Cover and refrigerate or freeze.

12 red apples, combination of gala, honeycrip, and mcintosh
¾ cup water
¼ teaspoon salt
3 sticks cinnamon
⅓ cup dark brown sugar
½ teaspoon vanilla
¼ teaspoon cinnamon
⅛ teaspoon nutmeg

Steps:

  • Peel and roughly dice the apples, removing the cores.
  • Add the apples to a slow cooker with the water, salt, and cinnamon sticks, and stir to combine. Cover and cook on high for 4 hours or low for 8 hours, stirring halfway through.
  • Uncover and remove the cinnamon sticks. Using an immersion blender, blend until your desired consistency is reached.
  • Scoop out half of the applesauce and enjoy immediately or refrigerate in an airtight container for up to 10 days.
  • To the remaining applesauce, add the brown sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg, and stir to combine. Cover and cook for 3 hours on high or 6 hours on low, stirring halfway through.
