Mom often made these fried apples for me while I was growing up. The recipe is very dear to me. —Margie Tappe, Prague, Oklahoma

Number Of Ingredients 5

1/2 cup butter, cubed
6 medium unpeeled tart red apples, sliced
3/4 cup sugar, divided
3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Vanilla ice cream, optional

Steps:

  • Melt butter in a large cast-iron or other ovenproof skillet. Add apples and 1/2 cup sugar; stir to mix well. Cover and cook over low heat for 20 minutes or until apples are tender, stirring frequently. , Add cinnamon and remaining sugar. Cook and stir over medium-high heat 5-10 minutes longer. If desired, serve with ice cream.

Fried Apples 'N' Onions Recipe - Just like Mrs. Wilder made image

Fried and apples and onions is a delicious old-fashioned recipe that's stood the test time of time with the perfect balance of sweet, tart, and salty!

Number Of Ingredients 4

1/2 pound bacon or salt pork
6 yellow onions
6 apples
2 Tablespoons brown sugar

Steps:

  • Cut bacon into strips, then fry until crisp.
  • While bacon is cooking, slice onions and core apples.
  • Remove cooked bacon to a warm platter.
  • In the remaining bacon grease, add onions and cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Add apple slices in even layer over onions and then sprinkle the brown sugar over all.
  • Cover skillet, and cook an additional 2-3 minutes, until apples begin to soften. Stir only to prevent burning or sticking, approximately once every 45-60 seconds.
  • Serve warm.

4-5 Apples, firm, medium size, sliced
1/2 cup Butter (1-stick)
1/2 cup Granulated Sugar
1/4 cup Brown Sugar
1 Tablespoon Ground Cinnamon
Dash of Nutmeg, if desired.

Steps:

  • Wash the apples. Remove the cores. Slice, and set aside.
  • Place a cast iron skillet over just below Medium heat on your stove top.
  • When pan is hot, add the stick of butter.
  • Add the granulated sugar.
  • Add the brown sugar.
  • Add the cinnamon.
  • Add the nutmeg, if desired.
  • Stir well until butter melts and sugars dissolve.
  • If mixture is thick, thin it down with a small amount of water or apple juice.
  • Add the sliced apples. Stir well to coat.
  • Stir often and cook apples until tender.
  • Serve warm.
  • Enjoy!

6 gala apples - don't peel
1 stick butter
3/4 c sugar
1/2 c apple juice
1 tsp cornstarch
1-1/2 tsp cinnamon
1-1/2 tsp vanilla
1 wooden spoon
1 large skillet (12 inch) with top

Steps:

  • 1. Get all ingredients together.
  • 2. DON'T peel apples! Wash and seed apples and slice into thick slices.
  • 3. Place apples in water to keep from turning brown.
  • 4. Turn burner to medium heat. Melt butter in a large iron skillet.
  • 5. When butter is melted, pour apples into the buttered skillet.
  • 6. Add sugar on top of the apples.
  • 7. Cover and cook for about 10 minutes.
  • 8. After 10 minutes, stir with a wooden spoon to combine butter and sugar together, mix well. Re-cover until apples are soft.
  • 9. Mix apple juice and cornstarch, stir.
  • 10. Add cinnamon.
  • 11. Add vanilla, stir well.
  • 12. After apples are soft, pour apple juice mixture on top of apples.
  • 13. Stir well.
  • 14. DON"T COVER. Let simmer for about 15 minutes or until thickened. Add to your favorite dish. DELICIOUS !!!
