CHEMICAL APPLE PIE (NO APPLE APPLE PIE)



Chemical Apple Pie (No Apple Apple Pie) image

This is a recipe for apple pie made without apples. It has all the characteristics of an apple pie with apples. If you didn't know better, you'd think that there really were apples in it. This is an old chemistry lab experiment to teach the limits of human senses.

1 recipe pastry for a 9 inch double crust pie
2 cups water
1 ½ cups white sugar
1 ½ teaspoons cream of tartar
25 buttery round crackers
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 tablespoons butter

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 450 degrees F (225 degrees C).
  • Roll out pastry and set aside. Bring water to a boil in a large saucepan.
  • In a small bowl mix together sugar and cream of tartar. Add mixture to boiling water. Stir, then add crackers, one at a time. Boil for 3 minutes, but do not stir.
  • Pour cracker mixture into pastry-lined pie pan. Sprinkle crackers with cinnamon and dot with butter or margarine. Cover with top pastry. Seal edges and cut steam vents in top.
  • Bake in preheated oven for 30 minutes, until crust is golden brown. May need to cover top pastry partway through baking to prevent overbrowning.

This sweet, tart apple pie contains no added sugar, for a wholesome take on a classic dessert.

2 (9 inch) pie shell
3 tablespoons cornstarch
1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
1 (12 fluid ounce) can unsweetened apple juice concentrate, thawed
6 cups sliced green apples

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • In a small bowl whisk together cornstarch, cinnamon, and 1/3 cup of the apple juice concentrate. Set aside.
  • In a large saucepan simmer apples with remaining apple juice concentrate until apples are tender, about 10 minutes. Stir in cornstarch mixture and continue to simmer until thickened. Remove from heat.
  • Spoon apple mixture into pastry-lined pie plate. Cover with top crust. Seal and flute edges. Cut steam vents in top.
  • Bake in preheated oven for 45 minutes, or until crust is golden brown.

This is a science experiment you eat. A friend of mine shared this with me. I just had to post it here.

Number Of Ingredients 7

1 ready-made pie crust
2 cups water
1 1/2 cups sugar (sucrose, C12H22O11)
1 1/2 teaspoons cream of tartar (potassium bitartrate, KHC4H4O6)
25 unsalted crackers
cinnamon
1 teaspoon butter

Steps:

  • You will also need:.
  • Big pot.
  • Wooden spoon.
  • If necessary, prebake the pie crust as instructed on the box.
  • Preheat oven to 400°F.
  • Put the water in the pot and heat to boiling.
  • While the water is heating, mix the sucrose with the potassium bitartrate.
  • Add the mixture to the boiling water, a little at a time, stirring after each addition.
  • Add the crackers, one at a time, to the boiling solution.
  • Boil for about 3 minutes, but do not stir.
  • Carefully pour the mixture into the pie crust.
  • Sprinkle a little cinnamon on top of the pie filling.
  • Dab butter evenly over the filling.
  • Bake in a preheated oven for about 15 minutes.
  • Cool and enjoy eating your experiment!
  • This pie looks and tastes like apple pie, but it contains no apples. The cream of tartar produces a weak acid which combines with other ingredients to produce the tangy taste of apples. This acid, combined with the pieces of solid cracker, closely resembles the taste and appearance of apple pie. Bon appétite!
