Homemade Taco Seasoning Mix image

Much lower salt than pre-made. Salt can be omitted. Great with half ground buffalo and half ground turkey breast or whatever you prefer. Buy bulk spices and you can make 5-plus batches for under $1.00!! Increasing black pepper and adding optional ingredients will increase heat. Using mild or regular chili powder and omitting optional ingredients will reduce heat. To keep salt content low make sure chili powder does not contain salt.

2 teaspoons hot chili powder
1 ½ teaspoons paprika
1 teaspoon onion powder
½ teaspoon sea salt
½ teaspoon garlic powder
½ teaspoon ground cumin
½ teaspoon oregano
¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, or to taste
1 pinch cayenne pepper, or to taste
1 pinch red pepper flakes, or to taste

Steps:

  • Mix chili powder, paprika, onion powder, sea salt, garlic powder, cumin, oregano, black pepper, cayenne pepper, and red pepper flakes in a bowl.

1 teaspoon season salt
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon chili powder
1 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon cumin
1 teaspoon beef bouillon powder
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon dried onion flakes (optional)

Steps:

  • Combine all the ingredients in a small container.
  • Brown one pound of ground beef or turkey and drain fat away. (I prefer ground turkey. There is no fat to drain away and it crumbles into tiny pieces very easily.).
  • Throw in seasoning mix and 3/4 cup of water and mix well with your ground meat.
  • Simmer until thick --
  • Note: combine your taco meat with about half of a can of refried beans for a delicious burrito or chimichanga filling.

  • Mix all ingredients together and place in a clean jar with a tight lid.
  • Use 2 T.

3 tablespoons chili powder
2 tablespoons ground cumin
2 tablespoons salt
1 tablespoon crushed hot red pepper flakes (optional)
1 tablespoon instant minced garlic or 2 teaspoons garlic powder
1 tablespoon cornstarch
2 teaspoons oregano

Steps:

  • Place all ingredients in blender and blend on high till well mixed and powdered.
  • Spoon 6 even portions of mix into plastic snack bags.
  • Label, store in spice cabinet. Keeps indefinitely. (OR, measure the whole thing--I haven't--and park it altogether in a covered jar, using 1/6 of the mixture each time you need taco spice.
