Number Of Ingredients 12

butter (for greasing pan)
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 lb hot Italian turkey sausage (casings removed)
1 medium onion (finely chopped)
1 medium red bell pepper (seeded and finely chopped)
1 lb French bread (rustic loaf, cut into 1-inch-thick cubes) or 1 lb Italian bread (rustic loaf, cut into 1-inch-thick cubes)
2 cups gruyere cheese, grated
6 large eggs
2 cups whole milk
1 cup heavy cream
1 1/2 tablespoons fresh chives, plus more (to garnish, sliced)
kosher salt & freshly ground black pepper

Steps:

  • Butter a 4-quart baking dish.
  • In a large skillet, heat the oil over medium heat. Once hot, add the sausage, onions and bell peppers. Cook, while stirring, until the sausage is cooked through and crumbly and the onions and peppers are soft, about 6 minutes.
  • Add the bread to the prepared baking dish. Stir in the sausage and pepper mixture and the cheese, reserving a bit of cheese for the top.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, cream, chives and some salt and pepper. Pour the mixture evenly over the bread and give a little stir to make sure it's evenly distributed. Sprinkle with the reserved cheese. Cover with plastic wrap and let soak for 30 minutes.
  • Remove the casserole from the refrigerator and let come to room temperature for 30 minutes. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Bake until the top is puffed and golden and a knife inserted in the middle comes out clean, about 1 hour. Garnish with more chopped chives before serving.

DS and I saw this made on one of Paula Deen's shows. DS wanted to try it so we did. It was lots of fun and pretty tasty. I have changed it slightly since as written didn't work for us. (I can't divide puff pastry into 5 neat squares!) This recipe could easily be adapted to suit many tastes - add your own condiments or change it up entirely! We added caramelized onions. Times do not include puff pastry thaw time.

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 lb lean ground beef
1/2 cup sweet onion
1 tablespoon steak seasoning (such as Montreal)
1 tablespoon steak seasoning, sauce
4 slices cheese (American, Swiss, sharp cheddar or one of your choosing)
1 sheet frozen puff pastry
1 egg yolk
1 teaspoon water

Steps:

  • Let frozen puff pastry sit at room temperature for approximately 20 minutes to thaw enough to easily work with it.
  • Preheat oven to 375°F and preheat grill or stovetop pan.
  • Mix ground beef, steak seasoning and steak seasoning sauce (use your hands, if necessary).
  • Form meat mixture into 4 smallish flat patties.
  • On grill (or stove-top), cook hamburgers to medium or medium-well.
  • Remove the burgers and top each with a slice of cheese.
  • Roll out the puff pastry, flattening slightly, and cut into 4 squares.
  • Cover each burger with a piece of puff pastry, flipping it over and wrapping around the bottom and pinching to seal the edges.
  • Place pies on ungreased baking sheet, pinched side down.
  • Whisk egg yolk and 1 tsp water.
  • Brush each pie with egg wash.
  • Bake for 15 minutes or until pie is golden brown.
  • Serve with condiments of your choosing.
