DIY CNC ROUTER : 30 STEPS - INSTRUCTABLES

From instructables.com
Estimated Reading Time 13 mins
  • What Is CNC. Let’s start with the basics for anyone that is new to this. CNC stands for Computer Numerical Control, which extends to many different applications but in most cases is used to describe a machine that is controlled by a computer to remove small amounts of material from a larger piece of material.
  • CNC Router Design. One of the aspects of any home built CNC machine is the use of each material in the construction of the machine vs the quantity of that material you have to buy.
  • CNC Router Parts and Materials. Here is the list of the main components needed to build this CNC mahine: Category. Part Number. Description. Supplier. Qty.
  • Tools. This is a list of the tools I had to buy to build the machine: Tool Description. Part Number. Supplier. Price. 5/8" Dia. Reduced Shank Drill Bit. 2933A28.
  • CNC Router Plans. Attached are all the drawings with complete dimensions and specs in "DIY CNC Router Drawings.pdf" The parts list pdf contains all the parts and tools listed in the instructable.
  • Drilling a Good Hole. In order to build this CNC router you will need to drill about a million holes in both steel and aluminum. You will also need to tap about half an million holes.
  • Stepper Motor Mounting Plate. The stepper motor mounting plate is a clever name for the plate that mounts the stepper motor. This part has been designed to be universal for the machine and you will need to make 5 of these parts.
  • Standoff. Let me start off saying that making your own standoffs is not worth your time. These parts can be purchased for less than a dollar a piece and will be made with much better tolerances.
  • Drive Motor Assembly. This is the basic motor and coupler assembly for each axis. Starting with the stepper mounting plate, the bronze bushing is placed into the center 5/8" hole.
  • X-Axis Frame. The x-axis frame is made from 1x2x0.065" steel tubing. The side rails are taped to allow for the mounting of the 20mm linear rails.

DIY CNC ROUTER BUILD (LARGE FORMAT 5X10FT, RACK AND PINION)

From instructables.com
Estimated Reading Time 13 mins
  • But How Much Did It Cost? This is one of the most asked questions that I get when people see my machine. How much did it all cost? The answer is 3500$ approx including the parts, services and the shipping/travelling costs.
  • Designing the Machine. Being a student of design I had only a faint idea of the engineering and mechanics of a CNC, so the first natural thing was to study the various nick nacks of a CNC.
  • List of Materials and Hardware. This is just a quick list and description of the parts I used and not the complete BOM. I apologise if I have missed any.
  • Tools Used. Apart from the few necessary tools, the only power tools I used for this build are as follows :- Drill press – I have a heavy duty drill press in my workshop.
  • Its All About That Base! The base started as two symmetric side profiles with three legs each joined by brackets and cross braced using MDF for stability.
  • Gantry Beam Design and Supports. As you have might seen in the above pics my gantry design is more like a torsion beam. This is so because I had to use the 4080 extrusions to make a very solid gantry which won’t flex and this was the only plausible solution I could come up with and it turned out good.
  • The Rack and Pinion Setup- There was no doubt that for the scale of the machine that I was building, I would be needing a rack and pinion setup, so I started looking all over the internet for rack and pinion drives.
  • Z Axis Carriage – Z axis is one of the most crucial parts of your CNC. As it works in a sort of a cantilever fashion it is very important that it does not give away in any form else the cuts won’t be clean.
  • Electronics. Now since I am an electronics noob I would prefer not get into the depth of this topic as there are much better sources to learn from.
  • Wire Management – Initially I just fixed a small arm like temporary fixture on the machine which carried the wires over it. Its better represented in the pics.
