HEIDESAND (MY FAMOUS SUGAR COOKIES)

Heidesand (My Famous Sugar Cookies) image

These cookies never last out the day at work, church get-togethers or wherever I take them. I got this recipe back in high school in my German class and have been making them ever since. Yummy! They've become my annual blue ribbon winner at the local county fair.

Time 35m

BETTY CROCKER'S SUGAR COOKIES

Betty Crocker's Sugar Cookies image

I have been making these cookies every year for Christmas since I was in high school!! I roll them really thin so they are crispy, not soft/chewy and only add sprinkles. This recipe is for a double batch, but can easily be divided. **Chilling dough not included in prep time**

Categories     Dessert

Time 1h

Yield 6-7 dozen

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 1/2 cups butter, softened
2 cups sugar
4 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla
5 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
2 teaspoons salt
colored sprinkles, for decoration

Steps:

  • Cream together butter, sugar, eggs, and vanilla.
  • In a separate bowl combine flour, baking powder, and salt.
  • Gradually mix dry ingredients into the butter/sugar mixture and stir until incorporated (can be done by hand, but I use a stand mixer).
  • Cover with plastic wrap and let chill in fridge until cold (approx. 1 hour).
  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
  • Roll out approximately 1 1/2-2 cups of dough at a time (or whatever amount you have room for on your workspace).
  • Cut cookies with seasonal cookie cutters.
  • Place cookies on parchment-lined cookie sheets for easy clean up.
  • Sprinkle with colored sugar sprinkles.
  • Bake 6-8 minutes or until edges turn golden brown.
  • Cool on wire rack and store at room temperature in an air-tight container.

SHOTWELL'S FAMOUS SUGAR COOKIES

Shotwell's Famous Sugar Cookies image

This is a sugar cookie recipe passed down to me by my mother, who made these every year. They take a bit more work than some and the dough requires refrigeration before rolling, but it is SO worth it! Makes 6-8 Dozen.

Provided by eric.shotwell

Categories     Dessert

Time 29m

Yield 6-8 Dozen

Number Of Ingredients 10

5 cups all-purpose flour
2 cups sugar
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1 cup butter (or part butter or part margarine)
3 eggs
1/2 cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Steps:

  • Mix 1 cup sugar with 5 cups flour and baking soda, baking powder, nutmeg, and salt.
  • Blend butter in with pastry cutter/pastry blender until crumbly.
  • Beat eggs slightly in separate bowl and add remaining sugar gradually to egg mixture.
  • Blend buttermilk and vanilla into egg mixture, then blend egg mixture together with dry ingredients. I use powdered buttermilk mix.
  • Chill dough in plastic wrap or plastic bags in refrigerator until ready to bake (or use immediately). If you are short on time, put the dough in the freezer for 15 minutes or so, rather than in the refrigerator overnight.
  • Turn 1/4 of dough onto lightly floured board.
  • Roll to about 1/8" to 1/4" thick. Cut with cookie cutters or hand-cut into circles or other shapes. Use cookie cutters that are relatively simple -- fancier cookie shapes tend to burn or break more easily with this recipe.
  • Dip cookie top lightly into cinnamon/sugar blend or into nutmeg/sugar blend, or shake on top of cookies.
  • Bake at 375 ° F for 6-9 minutes, until *very* light brown at edges.
  • Put on wire rack to cool.

  • Melt the butter in a small saucepan over medium heat, whisking frequently as the butter comes to a simmer (simmer, not boil). Browned specks will appear at the bottom of the pan. Whisk constantly until the the butter reaches a rich brown color. Note: The butter will burn very quickly at this stage so be careful. Once the butter is a rich brown at the bottom of the pan, remove from heat and let cool completely.
  • Once cooled, pour the butter in a large mixing bowl and beat until frothy. Add the sugar, milk and vanilla extract and beat until combined.
  • In a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking powder and salt. Add the flour mixture to the butter mixture and beat until the mixture resembles coarse sand.
  • Use your hands to form the mixture into a mass. The dough will be very dry and brittle. Turn the dough out onto a clean work surface and squish the dough to form two logs about 1-inch in diameter. The dough will be crumbly, keep working at it to form the logs (see pictures in this post for reference). Wrap them in plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.
