BRITISH GRILLED CHEESE WITH BAKED BEANS



British Grilled Cheese With Baked Beans image

Number Of Ingredients 7

2 plum tomatoes, cut into thick slices
Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper
2 thick slices white sandwich bread, toasted
1/2 cup prepared baked beans, warmed and drained
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 1/2 cups grated sharp white cheddar cheese (about 6 ounces)
2 scallions, chopped

Steps:

  • Preheat the broiler. Place the tomatoes on a baking sheet, season with salt and pepper and broil until the edges brown slightly, 5 to 10 minutes. Transfer the tomatoes to a plate.
  • Place the toasted bread on the baking sheet and spoon the beans evenly on top. Cover with the tomatoes and drizzle with the Worcestershire sauce, then sprinkle with the cheese and scallions. Broil until golden and bubbly, about 3 minutes.

1/2 cup diced sweet yellow onion
1/2 cup diced green bell pepper
Oil, for cooking
Two 15.5-ounce cans dark red kidney beans, drained and rinsed
Two 15.5-ounce cans northern white beans, drained and rinsed
One 15-ounce can tomato sauce
1/2 cup ketchup
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 tablespoon yellow mustard
1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon chili powder
1 teaspoon smoked paprika
2 cloves garlic, minced
Green onions, for garnish (optional)

Steps:

  • Preheat a grill for cooking at medium-high heat.
  • Place a skillet on the grill. Cook the onions and green peppers with some oil in the skillet for 3 to 4 minutes.
  • Add the beans, tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, mustard, vinegar, cayenne, chili powder, smoked paprika and garlic and stir. Cook with the grill covered, stirring occasionally, for about 15 minutes. Garnish with green onions, if using.

Grilled Strawberry BBQ Sauce Baked Beans image

4 cups strawberries (about 1 pound), hulled
4 teaspoons vegetable oil
1/2 cup ketchup
1/4 cup strawberry jam
1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
2 tablespoons blackstrap molasses
2 tablespoons soy sauce
2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
1 canned chipotle chile in adobo, chopped
1 clove garlic, grated
1/2 cup finely diced onions
1/2 cup finely diced red bell peppers
Two 15-ounce cans pinto bean, rinsed and drained
1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley, for garnish

Steps:

  • Preheat a charcoal or gas grill to medium-high heat.
  • Skewer the strawberries and coat with 2 teaspoons of the vegetable oil. Grill on all sides, 1 1/2 minutes total.
  • In a medium saucepan, combine the strawberries, ketchup, jam, balsamic vinegar, molasses, soy sauce, mustard, chiles and garlic. Cook over medium-low heat until the strawberries start to break down and all the ingredients combine, about 15 minutes.
  • Preheat the oven to 300 degrees F.
  • Using an immersion blender, blend the strawberry mixture until smooth. Continue to cook until the mixture is reduced by a third, about 15 minutes. This will yield about 2 cups sauce.
  • In a medium cast-iron skillet, heat the remaining 2 teaspoons oil. Add the onions and bell peppers and saute until soft, about 4 minutes. Add the beans and 1 1/2 cups of the sauce. Put the skillet in the oven and cook until the sauce thickens, about 25 minutes. Garnish with parsley and serve.

31 ounces pork and beans in tomato sauce
1/4 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
2 tablespoons molasses
1 small onion, chopped
1/4 cup ketchup
salt and pepper
3 slices bacon, cut in half

Steps:

  • Mix pork and beans, brown sugar, dry mustard, molasses, onion, ketchup, salt and pepper together.
  • Pour mixture into an oven-proof casserole dish or foil pan.
  • Cover top of beans with bacon.
  • Place casserole on cooking grill and cook for 1 hour.
  • Remove from grill and stir lightly before serving.
