SIMPLE HOMEMADE WHITE BREAD

Simple Homemade White Bread image

A delicious old-fashioned white bread recipe just like Grandma used to make!

Provided by Nellie

Categories     Side Dish     Snack

Number Of Ingredients 5

1 package dry yeast (about 2 1/4 teaspoons)
1 cup warm water (about 30-40 seconds in the microwave is perfect)
3 cups bread flour (if you can't find this go ahead and use all-purpose)
1 teaspoon salt
1 tsp honey

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, mix the honey and warm water together, add the yeast and stir until dissolved.
  • Add 2 1/2 cups of the flour and the salt to the yeast mixture.
  • Stir until you get a ball of dough. The dough will be soft.
  • ---all of these parts are super handy to do if you have a mixer!
  • Put the dough on a floured surface. Knead until smooth and stretchy (about 9 minutes) adding in the remaining flour as needed to keep the dough from becoming too sticky.
  • ---if you have a mixer with a dough hook...use it here!
  • Place the dough in a bowl sprayed with cooking spray or coated with oil.
  • Put the bowl in a warm place and cover with a towel (or use my warm water in bowl method above :)) or plastic wrap sprayed with cooking spray.
  • Let the dough rise until doubled in size. (about 45 minutes)
  • Punch your down and then cover and wait 5 minutes.
  • Gently shape the dough into a loaf.
  • Place in loaf pan coated with spray, butter, shortening.
  • Cover (again with a towel or sprayed plastic wrap) and let rise until doubled again (about 45 minutes)
  • Preheat oven to 450 degrees F (230 degrees C)
  • Bake at 450 degrees for about 20 minutes.
  • if you like...apply a egg or milk wash before baking.

This homemade bread is always a family favorite and can be done so easily with this perfect recipe my grandma handed down to me. Making bread is easier than you think!

Time 3h45m

Number Of Ingredients 6

2 1/2 cup warm water
1/4 cup sugar
1 1/4 teaspoon salt
1 Tablespoon yeast
5 cups all purpose flour
2 Tablespoons oil (I used olive oil)

Steps:

  • In a stand mixer add the warm water, sugar, salt and yeast. Let the yeast proof until it bubbles for about 5 minutes. Using the dough hook start adding the flour one cup at a time until the dough combines and forms a soft dough.
  • On a floured surface knead the dough until smooth and elastic and form a ball. Add the oil to the large bowl and add the dough to the bowl and cover. Let rise until it has doubled 1- 1 1/2 hours.
  • Grease and flour 2 9x5 inch pans. Punch the dough to release the air. Lay the dough onto a flat surface and cut into two loaves. Roll each loaf up and place into the loaf pans. Let rise until it doubles another 1-1 1/2 hours.
  • Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown on the tops. Remove from the oven and let cool for 10 minutes before slicing.

GRANDMA CARTER'S BREAD

Grandma Carter's Bread image

She made this bread every day of her life until she had to go to assisted living. She lived to be 105 so I know the recipe is very old.

Provided by Jacque Hodges @Jacquehodges

Categories     Other Breads

Number Of Ingredients 6

5 cup(s) flour
2 cup(s) water
2 package(s) yeast, cake
1/2 cup(s) shortening
1 tablespoon(s) salt
3/4 cup(s) sugar

Steps:

  • Mix dry ingredients, cut in shortening. Make a hollow in the center of the dry ingredients.
  • Dissolve yeast in warm water. Add to the center of the flour mixture.
  • Knead until smooth and elastic, adding more flour as needed. This takes longer than you think it should.
  • Put in greased bowl and cover. Raise in warm place until double.
  • Punch down and turn. Raise again to double.
  • Make into rolls or loaves. Let raise again.
  • Bake at 375 degrees until golden and sound hollow when tapped.
  • Remove from pans to cool. Rub tops with butter while still hot.
  • This is the recipe exactly as she told it to me. If you've never made bread before, I would try a different recipe with more detail first. She was better at showing us what to do than explaining all the steps. She's been gone for 10 years now and I think of her every time I make this.

Grandma Russell's Bread image

I remember as a child always smelling fresh homemade bread and rolls whenever I walked into Grandma's house. The warm slices were delicious and melted in my mouth! -Janet Polito, Nampa, Idaho

Provided by Taste of Home

Time 50m

Yield 2 loaves (12 slices each).

Number Of Ingredients 12

1 package (1/4 ounce) active dry yeast

1/4 cup butter, melted
3/4 cup sugar

Stir in enough remaining flour to make a soft dough. Turn onto a floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic, 6-8 minutes. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease the top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1-1/2 hours., Punch down dough and divide in half. On a lightly floured surface, roll each half into a 16x8-in. rectangle. Brush with melted butter. Combine sugar and cinnamon; sprinkle over butter. Roll up jelly-roll style, starting with a short side; pinch seam to seal. Place in 2 greased 8x4-in. loaf pans. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 45 minutes. Preheat oven to 375°. Bake loaves until golden brown, about 20 minutes. Cover loosely with foil if tops brown too quickly. Remove from pans to wire racks; serve warm.
