Yesterday was my nieces birthday so I had a party for her and of course she requested I make the cake lol. I had about an hour to bake and ice it lol before leaving for dinner. So I showed her the last of the five boxes of cake mix left from my daughters shopping spree and she chose an orange mix as the base. I added some orange juice instead of water and some orange yogurt and ended up with this. After singing happy birthday and blowing out candles we cut the cake and everyone had a slice. Everyone was unanimous in thinking it ended up tasting like fruit loops. lol. it was moist and delicious and definitely kid friendly : ) I used a white icing with a bit of orange extract in it as the frosting and also in between the two layers.

- 1 box orange cake mix
- 3 eggs
- 1 1/3 c orange juice (mine had pulp)
- 1/3 c oil
- 3/4 of a single serving orange yogurt
- your favorite vanilla frosting with 1/2 t orange extract blended in

Steps:

  • Grease 2-9 inch pans and lightly flour them. Preheat your oven to 350
  • Put cake mix in large bowl
  • Add remaining ingregients (except frosting)
  • Mix on medium speed until blended well.
  • Divide batter between to pans and bake according to box directions. (I used 350 degree oven for 20 to 25 minutes) Tooth pick should come out clean.
  • Remove from oven and allow to cool completely
  • Invert one cake onto cake plate and spread frosting on cake. Invert second cake onto a plate and flip over so the flat side is now on top of first cake.
  • Frost cake and decorate as desired.
  • Now that I know the cake tastes like fruit loops I may incorporate them into the decorating next time I make this cake for the kiddies : )

Fruity, slightly elevated, ridiculously easy and dangerously addictive. Inspired by the movie "Get Out."

3/4 cup unsalted butter, plus more for bowl and pan
12 cups Fruit Loops cereal (from one 12-ounce box)
2 (10 1/2 ounce) bags mini marshmallows
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract or 1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste
cold milk (for serving)

Steps:

  • Lightly butter a large heatproof bowl, add cereal and set aside. Lightly butter a 13x9" baking dish, then line with parchment paper, leaving a 2" overhang on long sides. Lightly butter parchment. Cook 3/4 cup butter in a large skillet over medium heat, swirling, until butter foams, then browns (be careful not to let it burn), 5-7 minutes. Add marshmallows and salt. Reduce heat to low and cook, stirring constantly, until marshmallows are melted and mixture is smooth, about 3 minutes. Mixture will have brown specks and almost look grayish in color, and that's ok!
  • Pour marshmallow mixture over cereal scraping the pan to get all the mixture into the bowl. Stir with a large heatproof spatula or large spoon, scraping bottom of bowl and folding, until cereal is completely coated, mixture will get very sticky and thicken as it cools so work quickly. Scrape into prepared pan; then cover with a sheet of parchment paper. Press down firmly to make an even, compact layer (just don't press too hard or you'll break the loops!). Cover treats loosely with plastic and let sit until cool, about 2 hours.
  • Just before serving, using parchment paper overhang, lift treats out of pan and place on a cutting board; remove parchment. Using a serrated knife, trim about 1/2" from all sides to make a squared-off rectangle, then cut into an 8x6 grid to make 24 squares.
  • Do Ahead: Treats can be made 1 day ahead. Leave in pan. Store tightly wrapped at room temperature. Cut into squares just before serving.

  • Place milk and cereal in a medium bowl. Stir well and steep for 20-25mins. Strain into a small bowl using a fine mesh sieve. Gently press the milk out of the cereal using a spatula or wooden spoon.
  • Beat butter and cream cheese until fluffy (2 mins). Add powdered sugar one cup at a time. Add vanilla and beat until fluffy (3 mins).
  • Place one layer of cake on a cake stand or serving plate. Brush generously with remaining cereal milk. Top with approximately 2/3 cup of buttercream. Repeat with remaining layers and crumb coat the cake. Chill for 20mins.
