CRUNCHY FRENCH TOAST

Crunchy French Toast image

I just have one word to describe this French toast: Oh my. And okay, that was two words.

Categories     breakfast     dessert     main dish

Time 15m

Yield 4 servings

Number Of Ingredients 9

3 whole Eggs
1/4 c. Half-and-half
1 tsp. Vanilla Extract
1/2 tsp. Ground Cinnamon
1/3 c. Sugar
4 slices Whole Wheat Bread (or Any Bread)
1 c. Panko Breadcrumbs
1 stick Salted Butter, Melted
Softened Butter And Maple (or Pancake) Syrup, For Serving

Steps:

  • In a pie pan, whisk together the eggs, half-and-half, half the sugar, and half the cinnamon. Set aside. In a separate pie pan, stir together the panko breadcrumbs with the rest of the sugar and cinnamon. Use a fork to stir in 2 tablespoons of the butter so that the crumbs are slightly moist. Set aside. In a large nonstick skillet, heat the rest of the melted butter over medium-low heat. One by one, dunk the bread in the egg mixture (turning to coat), then lay them in the dish with the panko crumbs, turning them over and pressing them gently so that they stick and totally cover the surface.Place them into the skillet with the butter and let them cook on the first side for 5 to 6 minutes, watching closely to make sure the crumbs don't burn. (If they start to darken too fast, turn the heat slightly lower and watch.) Turn them over and let them cook for 3 minutes on the other side.Transfer the pieces to individual plates and serve with butter and syrup. Delicious!

Time 30m

Yield 4 servings

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
3 tablespoons sugar
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
Pinch kosher salt
3 large eggs
3 cups cornflakes cereal, crushed
4 pieces challah or Italian bread, sliced about 1-inch thick
2 tablespoons butter, plus more as needed

Remove the bread, set on the prepared baking sheet and transfer to the oven to keep warm. Add fresh butter to the pan and repeat with the remaining bread. Transfer to the oven for 2 minutes, then serve with maple syrup.

1/2 cup sliced almonds, lightly crushed
4 tablespoons butter
12 (1 1/2-inch-thick) slices challah bread or soft "Italian" style bread

Mint sprigs and edible flowers, suggested plate garnish
1 large navel orange, peeled and chopped

2 tablespoons sugar
1/4 cup orange liqueur (recommended: Grand Marnier)

  • Remove toast and bacon from oven. Warm syrup in a small pitcher in microwave 15 seconds on high. Serve toast and bacon on plates with optional garnish of mint and edible flowers.
  • Pass syrup and topping at the table.

  • Syrup. Something simple and sweet for your French toast is of course syrup! I love the classic maple syrup but there’s definitely other kinds you can try.
  • Fresh Fruit. For a refreshing way to enjoy your French toast, top it off with some fresh fruits. I love strawberries, blueberries, and bananas. If you want a little something extra, mix and match the flavors with your chosen syrup or sprinkle on some powdered sugar.
  • Peanut Butter. A spoon of peanut butter will also go great with your French toast. I like sweet and creamy peanut butter but you can also try it with something crunchier or saltier.
  • Bacon. For a big breakfast lover like me, bacon is simply too good to resist! I love a good sweet and savory combo and French toast and bacon is no exception.
  • Ham and Cheese. Monte Cristo breakfast, anyone? A ham and cheese French toast sandwich is a great on-the-go meal. I like to use turkey ham with Swiss cheese, just like a regular Monte Cristo sandwich but with the added sweetness of French toast.
  • Nutella. Here’s one the kids will definitely love. Nutella and French toast will be a sure, picky-eater-proof hit on the breakfast table. Really, you can’t go wrong with this!
  • Cinnamon. There’s something about the scent of cinnamon that makes any sweet treat taste even better! Sprinkling just a bit of ground cinnamon over your French toast is a great way to add flavor.
  • Peaches and Cream. Here’s a combo that’s made its way to the hall of fame of dessert combos: Peaches and Cream! You can make it simple with some fresh peaches and whipped cream or go all in with some fried or glazed peaches and vanilla ice cream.
  • Mozzarella and Honey. If you want another sweet and savory combo, you’re going to love this one! Mozzarella and honey go perfectly together. Their subtly savory and mildly sweet flavors compliment each other oh so well.
  • Coconut Flakes. Craving a tropical-themed breakfast? Add some coconut flakes to your French toast! The coconut flavor is subtle so you might want to add some fruit as well.
