1/2 head red cabbage, thinly sliced (about 6 cups)
1/4 cup vinegar
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 apples, chopped

Steps:

  • Heat oil in a large saucepan or skillet over medium heat. Add onion and cook until clear, about 3-5 minutes.
  • Add cabbage, vinegar, sugar and salt. Mix well and add apples.
  • Reduce heat to low. Continue cooking, stirring occasionally, until cabbage is soft, about 30 minutes. Serve warm or cold.
  • Refrigerate leftovers within 2 hours.

2 medium unpeeled tart cooking apples, sliced
1 medium head red cabbage, coarsely shredded (8 cups)
1/4 cup water
1/4 cup red wine vinegar
2 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper

Steps:

  • Melt butter in Dutch oven over medium heat. Cook apples in butter 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Stir in remaining ingredients. Heat to boiling; reduce heat. Cover and simmer 35 to 40 minutes or until cabbage is tender.

1 medium orange, halved
1 medium head red cabbage, cored and diced (1-inch pieces)
2 medium Granny Smith apples, cored and cut into 1-inch pieces
½ medium onion, chopped
¼ cup vinegar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon salt
ground black pepper to taste

Steps:

  • Juice one orange half. Remove and discard the peel from the second half, and cube the flesh.
  • Combine cabbage, apples, onion, vinegar, cinnamon, and salt in a large stock pot over low heat. Add orange juice and chopped flesh, then season with pepper. Cover and simmer, stirring occasionally, until cabbage is tender and has reduced, at least 45 minutes.

Steps:

  • Heat oil in a medium size saucepan. Stir in cabbage and onion; fry until wilted. Stir in apple and water, salt and pepper. Cover and simmer about 25 minutes.

1/4 cup butter
1 medium head red cabbage (2 pounds) , shredded
2 medium tart apples, peeled and chopped
1 cup apple cider or apple juice
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
2 tablespoons cider vinegar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
2 bacon strips, cooked and crumbled
Minced fresh parsley, optional

Steps:

  • In a large skillet, saute onion in butter until golden and tender. Add the cabbage, apples, cider, sugar, vinegar, salt and pepper. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for about 1 hour or until cabbage and apples are tender and the liquid is reduced. Sprinkle with bacon and parsley if desired.

4 slices bacon, chopped
1 small onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced, or to taste
1 head red cabbage, chopped
½ cup apple cider vinegar
¼ cup brown sugar
2 cooking apples (such as Cortland or Gala) peeled and chopped
salt and ground black pepper to taste

Steps:

  • Heat coconut oil over medium heat in a large skillet; cook and stir bacon, onion, and garlic until fragrant, about 5 minutes. Stir cabbage into bacon mixture and toss to coat with oil. Cover skillet, reduce the heat, and cook, stirring occasionally, until cabbage begins to soften, about 10 minutes.
  • Stir cider vinegar and brown sugar together in a bowl; pour over cabbage mixture.   • Cook in a small amount of boiling water with salt, cloves and pepper for about 45 minutes.
  • Don't let it boil dry, but don't add too much water.

  • Next, add the finely sliced cabbage into a large pan (e.g. a large saucepan, soup pot or Dutch oven). Add the cinnamon stick, cloves, bay leaves, juniper berries, vinegar, sugar, two teaspoons of salt and pour over the water.
  • Cover and leave to simmer for about 1 hour stirring occasionally. If the water starts to evaporate too fast add some more water.
  • Peel and cut the apples. I prefer to cut them into dice but you can also quarter them or finely slice them. Everyone prefers them differently.
