DISCONTINUED CEREALS FROM THE 1980S AND 1990S

  • Oreo O’s. Oreo O’s made their debut in 1997, and they were the most epic breakfast cereal to ever grace this planet. Chocolately. Crunchy. Creamy. It was basically like eating cookies for breakfast.
  • Dino Pebbles. Here’s a favorite of ’80s kids everywhere! Dino Pebbles were like Lucky Charms, but cooler, ’cause they had multi-colored dinosaurs as marshmallows, and the cereal had a sweeter, vanilla-ish flavor.
  • Pop Tarts Crunch Cereal. Remember this short-lived offering? It showed up in stores in 1994, and there were 2 flavor options: Brown Sugar Cinnamon and Strawberry.
  • Sprinkle Spangles. This offering from General Mills was basically just a bunch of sprinkles in a bowl… a.k.a. awesome for kids, not so awesome for parents!
  • Pro Stars Cereal. Does anyone else remember this cereal? The commercial featured Wayne Gretzy, and the star-shaped bits were whole-grain and sweetened with honey.
  • Teddy Grahams Breakfast Bears Cereal. The great thing about this cereal was that it was just an excuse to eat cookies for breakfast. (Although, I guess the same can be said for nearly every offering on this list.)
  • Cinnamon Mini Buns. Miniature cinnamon buns in milk. What’s not to love? While Kellogg’s stopped making Cinnamon Mini Buns, the company now offers a Cinnabon cereal, which could be a good substitute.

11 DISCONTINUED CEREALS FROM THE '70S, '80S, AND '90S

From mentalfloss.com

  • Crazy Cow. The makers of this defunct General Mills product understood that the best part of a bowl of cereal is often the sugary milk it leaves behind.
  • Banana Frosted Flakes. Frosted Flakes has come in many special flavors over the years, but few have gained the cult status of the banana variety from the early '80s.
  • Waffleos. Cereal shaped like tiny breakfast items has been a winning formula for decades, and Ralston (the company behind the tie-in novelty cereal craze of the 1980s) followed suit with a bite-sized waffle cereal called Waffleos in 1979.
  • Cinna-Crunch Pebbles. Fruity Pebbles and Cocoa Pebbles are two of the most successful tie-in products in cereal history. In 1998, Post released a new Flintstones-branded flavor: Cinna-Crunch Pebbles.
  • Cinnamon Mini Buns. Kelloggs debuted Cinnamon Mini Buns in 1991, and two years later, the company replaced it with Mini Swirlz Cinnamon Buns, adding another cereal shaped like a traditional breakfast item to the list of cult-favorite treats.
  • Smurf-Berry Crunch. The success of the Smurfs cartoon show inevitably led to the release of Smurf-Berry Crunch in 1982. The colorful, fruit-flavored cereal appealed to kids, but it had some unintended side effects: The product was notorious for dying poop Smurf-blue.
  • Ghostbusters Cereal. One of Ralston's most successful tie-in products from the 1980s was Ghostbusters cereal. After debuting in 1985, the branded cereal stuffed with ghost-shaped marshmallows remained on shelves for an impressive five years.
  • Sprinkle Spangles. General Mills launched Sprinkle Spangles in the fall of 1993. The star-shaped, sprinkle-covered cereal arrived less than a year after Disney's Aladdin (1992), and it featured a cartoon genie as the mascot.
  • Vanilly Crunch. Cap'n Crunch has led to several popular spin-off products, including Crunch Berries and Peanut Butter Crunch. You might forget about one of its other variations: Vanilly Crunch.
  • Ice Cream Cones. While people can stomach cookies for breakfast, ice cream cereal was apparently a step too far. Ice Cream Cones was available in vanilla and chocolate chip flavors when it debuted in 1986, but it was off shelves by the time '87 rolled around.

23 DISCONTINUED CEREALS WE MISS THE MOST — EAT THIS …

  • Total Raisin Brand. It's not always a walk in the park to find a well-rounded, healthy breakfast cereal that actually tastes delicious. However, the General Mills Total cereal brand line became that option back in the 1960s, which happened to include this variety: Total Raisin Bran.
  • Mr. T Cereal. If you've always loved Kellogg's Cornflakes or Cap' n Crunch, you probably were just as big of a fan of Mr.T's iconic breakfast cereal by Quaker in 1984.
  • Magic Puffs. This thematic cereal might be one of the best things to come out of the 1970s. The cereal itself was deliciously sweet for breakfast, but each box had magic tricks inside.
  • Cinnamon Mini Buns. A lot of people seem to have jumped on the trend lately of making tiny cinnamon rolls and turning them into cereal, and we can only assume it's because they desperately miss this '90s cereal.
  • Hidden Treasures. Eating a bowl of Hidden Treasures was quite literally a treasure hunt. The little bite-size pieces were filled with a fruity center—but not all of them!
  • Crazy Cow. Similar to Cocoa Puffs, Crazy Cow cereal turned your milk chocolate. Or, if you had the strawberry flavor, it turned your milk strawberry. The cereal was released in the late 1970s and saw a big push in sales from Star Wars fans when they started putting trading cards in the boxes.
  • C-3PO's. Star Wars and cereal go hand in hand. In the 1980s, we were all enjoying C-3PO's, a honey-flavored cereal similar to cereal but shaped like little B's and 8's.
  • Mini Trix. Mini Trix came and went in a flash. This cereal was released in the mid-2010s and was exactly what it sounds like: mini Trix pieces. Whereas the classic Trix cereal is small fruit-shaped pieces, Mini Trix were tiny fruit-flavored pellets.
  • Marshmallow Krispies. Sadly, this cereal from the '80s didn't last because it's seemingly the perfect formula for a breakfast treat. Kellogg's creation was quite simply toasted rice cereal with marshmallow pieces.
  • Waffelos. For those days when you didn't have time to make actual waffles, there was Waffelos cereal. The breakfast selection from the 1970s was tiny little crunchy waffle bites flavored with maple syrup, and they were better than any other waffle cereal to come after it.
