my mother made the BEST Crystal Pound Cake, because the outside of her cake would crystalize. I have yet to achieve this on mine. It needs no icing. And is wonderful warm from the oven.

Number Of Ingredients 8

3 cup(s) sugar
1 cup(s) shortening
5 - eggs
3 cup(s) flour
1/2 teaspoon(s) baking soda
1/2 teaspoon(s) salt
1 tablespoon(s) vanilla extract
1 cup(s) buttermilk

Steps:

  • Cream shortening and sugar well. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition add vanilla.
  • Sift flour, baking soda and salt together. Add alternately with buttermilk, beating well after each addition.
  • Pour into greased and floured bundt pan. Bake at 350 degrees 1 hour, or until toothpick inserted into cake comes out clean. Turn out onto cake plate, let cool. Enjoy!

Another of my grandmother's recipes. From when pound cakes were literally made from a pound of every thing.

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 cup(s) shortening, butter flavor
3 cup(s) sugar
5 - eggs
1 tablespoon(s) vanilla extract
1 cup(s) buttermilk
3 cup(s) all purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon(s) baking soda
1/2 teaspoon(s) salt

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 10X4 tube pan or a 12 cup bunt pan with shortening, ( sides bottom and tube); flour.
  • Mix flour, soda, and salt together in a separate bowl.
  • In large separate bowel cream together shortening and sugar with pastry blender until coarse crumbs are formed. Beat in eggs, (one at a time), and vanilla at low speed with an electric mixer. Beat on high speed for 5 minutes, scraping bowl occasionally.
  • Beat in flour mixture alternately with buttermilk at low speed, (begin and end with the flour mixture), just until combined. Spread into pan.
  • Bake 70 to 80 minutes, or toothpick comes out clean. Invert immediately onto wire rack and cool 20 minutes; remove from pan. Cool completely.
