Non-Edible Cinnamon Ornaments image

This is a very fun and easy craft project to make with children. Makes wonderful smelling ornaments and pretty 'package tie-ons!'

Provided by Susan

Yield 1

Number Of Ingredients 5

1 cup ground cinnamon
1 tablespoon ground cloves
1 tablespoon ground nutmeg
¾ cup applesauce
2 tablespoons glue

Steps:

  • In a medium bowl, stir together the cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg. Mix in the applesauce and glue. Work the mixture with your hands 2 to 3 minutes to form a ball. If mixture is too wet, add more cinnamon. If mixture is too dry, add more applesauce.
  • Lightly dust a clean surface with cinnamon. Roll out the dough to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut out shapes with cookie cutters, and use a toothpick to make a hole at the top for hanging with a ribbon.
  • Dry in a slow oven 200 degrees F (100 degrees C) for several hours, or air dry in a sunny spot for 4 or 5 days. When dry, decorate with gingham and/ or ribbon.

CINNAMON ORNAMENTS DOUGH

Cinnamon Ornaments Dough image

I have made several batches of this stuff. You can find recipes all over the internet, but this one works best for me. My favorites are the ones that really look like cookies (they make the kids and husbands crazy). This is a good craft project for kids too!

Time 8h10m

Yield 10 ornaments

Number Of Ingredients 2

1/2 cup ground cinnamon
1/2 cup store bought applesauce

Steps:

  • For decorating: Tulip puffy fabric paint in matte white, white acrylic paint, white glue, beads or glitter, cookie cutters.
  • Pour cinnamon in a bowl and gradually add applesauce and stir until mixture forms a stiff dough.
  • Using extra cinnamon as "flour" roll out the dough to 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick.
  • Cut out shapes with cookie cutters.
  • Using a straw or skewer punch a hole at the top of the ornament.
  • Bake at 200°F on a parchment lined baking pan.
  • Until ornaments are very dry and very hard.
  • Allow to cool to room temperature.
  • The Tulip paint looks exactly like Royal icing so you can make inedible"cookies" to decorate your tree with (like those big Martha Stewart ones).
  • They last a very long time and do not attract insects.
  • If you use a cookie cutter that will imprint a design on your "cookies" you can use a dry paint brush with white acrylic paint to give your "cookies" a powdered sugar look.
  • Or you can decorate your ornaments with beads and glitter to add sparkle to your holiday.
  • Bottom line: they are easy and inexpensive to make, plus they smell GREAT!

  • Combine the cinnamon and applesauce in a mixing bowl. Stir until combined. It should resemble cinnamon-colored cornmeal. It’s okay if there are a few larger chunks, too.
  • Pour in the glue. Stir until fully combined. Toward the end, it is easier to knead the dough with your hands to incorporate any last bits of cinnamon. It will be a fairly stiff dough.
  • Cure for one hour: Wrap the dough in plastic wrap, and let it sit for one hour at room temperature while the glue cures.
