Champagne Julep image

Lower in strength than most old-school julep cocktails, champagne adds a zing if not a sparkle.

Number Of Ingredients 5

8 Mint leaves
15 ml Cognac (brandy)
7.5 ml Sugar syrup (rich) 2 sugar to 1 water
1 Angostura or other aromatic bitters
90 ml Champagne Brut

Steps:

  • SHAKE first 4 ingredients with ice
  • Add champagne and more to shaker, then throw twice before straining into julep tin filled with crushed ice
  • Serve with a metal straw

It's a mint julep, where cognac and sparkling wine replace the bourbon. If you don't have crushed ice, put some in a towel and whack it with a mallet. Or add ice to a shaker and shake vigorously to crack it.

1 teaspoon white sugar
1 tablespoon warm water
½ cup crushed ice, or as needed
2 fluid ounces cognac
2 fluid ounces chilled dry sparkling wine, or as needed

Steps:

  • Place mint leaves in a tall cocktail glass. Add sugar and warm water; muddle gently. Add crushed ice. Pour in cognac; stir. Top with sparkling wine.

2 sprigs of fresh mint
2 cubes clear ice
champagne or sparkling wine
splash Bourbon (optional)
fresh fruit slices, optional garnish

Steps:

  • Place one sugar cube and two sprigs of fresh mint into a chilled highball or julep glass. Add two cubes of clear ice and slowly pour in well-chilled champagne or sparkling wine, stirring constantly. A splash of bourbon is optional. Garnish with slices of fresh fruit, if desired.
