BLACK DEATH FOOD PEOPLE USED TO CURE THE BUBONIC PLAGUE - SO …

From soyummy.com
Estimated Reading Time 7 mins
  • Mint Sauce. According to the BBC, mint sauce was one such condiment used to balance the body’s “humors.” Words originally inherited from Ancient Greek philosophers Aristotle, Hippocrates, and Galen, these humors were blood (sanguine), yellow bile (choleric), black bile (melancholic), and phlegm (phlegmatic).
  • Vinegar. In modern times, we still sip apple cider vinegar to help digestion and improve our overall health. So it shouldn’t be a surprise that our medieval ancestors used vinegar for its health benefits during the bubonic plague.
  • Mustard. Another condiment used to balance the humors was mustard, a spicy, “hot” remedy. Mustard has been around since ancient Roman times and was used in many medieval recipes.
  • Horseradish. Time to sweat it out. Like mustard, zesty horseradish was prescribed to those affected by the plague in an effort to help them sweat out their disease.
  • Applesauce. Applesauce was also used to balance the humors. Due to the cinnamon and clove spices used while preparing it, applesauce was most likely used to help the “hot” humors: yellow bile and blood.
  • Arsenic. Arsenic was used in potions and topical treatments during the bubonic plague. Its toxic properties were well known by Greek philosophers. Nero even fatally used arsenic on his stepbrother, Tiberius Britannicus in 55 CE.
  • Crushed Minerals. An expensive concoction that only some people could afford. If you could afford to consume crushed diamonds, emeralds, and other precious minerals, a doctor may prescribe you just that.
  • Metallic Salts. Do not try this at home. According to The Lancet, some physicians practicing during the black death prescribed metallic salts (mercury, cesium, aluminum, nickel, etc.)
  • Unicorn Horn. Yeah, we were confused too. Sometimes, potions made with metallic salts would also contain frog legs and powdered unicorn horn. These potions, sold at exorbitant prices by quacks who posed as physicians, were marketed as magic elixirs and cure-alls.
  • Treacle. This appears to be one of the most pleasant remedies that was prescribed to treat the black death, but just you wait. “Treacle,” a word used by Middle English-speakers to refer to a kind of medicine, is any kind of uncrystallized syrup collected during the process of refining sugar.

THE BLACK DEATH (10 MEDIEVAL CURES) - THECOLLECTOR

From thecollector.com
  • Vinegar and the Black Death. The Vinegar Merchant, by Abraham Bosse, mid-to-late 17th century, via the Metropolitan Museum. Known as Four Thieves Vinegar, this Black Death cure from the Medieval Period mixed vinegar with garlic, herbs, and spices.
  • Curing the Black Death with Onions. The humble onion was one of the home remedies that desperate doctors and patients alike tried to use to cure the plague, by rubbing chopped raw onion on the buboes (the large pus-filled boils that turned black, hence the name, the Black Death).
  • Blood-Letting. Going back to Galen’s theory of the four humors, blood-letting was a common medical procedure in the Medieval Period. The idea was to allow some of the excess humors to drain out of the body.
  • Live Chickens and the Vicary Method. This is one of the more bizarre quack cures for the Black Death. This treatment was named the “Vicary Method” after Thomas Vicary, the doctor who promulgated it.
  • Snakes. The Chinese had been using snakes in their traditional medicine since at least 100 CE, and snake meat was eaten to aid circulation and remove toxins from the body of a patient.
  • Leeches. Leeches were used as a treatment for the Black Death in much the same way that the fleam was — they were used to draw ‘bad’ blood out of the patient.
  • Feces. Human excrement is perhaps the foulest in a long line of revolting plague treatments. Feces were mixed up with other substances into a paste consistency and smeared on buboes that had been cut open.
  • Flagellation. Let us not forget that religion pervaded every aspect of life in Europe during the Medieval Period. It is, therefore, no surprise that many considered the Black Death to be a punishment from God for the sins man committed on earth.
  • Powdered Unicorn Horn. The Medieval Period is known for its mythical beasts, with the unicorn being perhaps the most intriguing. According to medieval myths, the unicorn could only be subdued and captured by a virginal maiden.
  • Fire: Medieval Cures for the Black Death. The physicians who attended Pope Clement VI during the Black Death were really onto something. They suggested that he surround himself with flaming torches, to keep the disease at bay (as well as sick people).
